(East Moline, Illinois) The men's golf team closed out the fall season in style with a 1st place finish at the Ashford University Invitational.
The Saints beat out ten other teams en route to an eighteen stroke victory at Short Hills Country Club in East Moline, Illinois. The men encountered gusting winds at Short Hills, a 6,710 yard layout with a par of 72.
The Saints' charge was lead by sophomore Mike Fitzgerald (Flossmoor, Illinois) who won the tournament overall with three-round scores of (79-72-73) for a total of 224. Right behind him were sophomore Matt Code (Ontario, Canada) and junior Mike Prior (Schoolcraft, Michigan) who both tied for second overall with scores of 225. Code fired (73-77-75), and Prior carded (73-78-74).
Freshman Chris Noble (Niles, Michigan) also placed in the top ten for the Saints marking scores of (77-71-79) for a seventh place finish at 227. Senior Eric Hartstein (South Bend, Indiana) tied for 38th with a score of 238. Noble's 71 in the second round tied him for the lead going into the final day, and also tied for the lowest round during the tournament.
As a team, Holy Cross posted (302, 298, 301) a 901, eighteen strokes better than runner-up Mt. Mercy University's 919. The victory was the second of the year for the Saints and the second consecutive and placing second the first four tournaments of the fall. Holy Cross have never finshed below second place in any tournament this fall.
"I was very pleased to see the guys go out there and take care of business like that," said head coach Tim Holt after the tournament, "We are going to work hard over the winter and hopefully keep this up for the spring."
