Junior Lauren Malinowski Looks to Pass
(Notre Dame, Indiana) The 2011-12 women's basketball season began Wednesday night against the visiting Lancers of Grace College in crowded McKenna Arena at the Pfeil Center.
The game also marked the first official contest of the new coaching staff headed by Aimee Litka. Litka, a St. Joseph High School and Valparaiso University standout was hired before the start of the season to take over the program.
The Saints started off a bit jittery in the early going, turning over the ball on the first possession, but settled in during the first half and played hard. The Saints played stingy defense and played for all loose balls, something the new coaching staff undoubtedly was pleased with.
The Saints struggled mightily shooting the ball for the majority of the game, but picked up the slack in the second half courtesy of the 3 ball by junior guard Lauren Malinowski (Dearborn Heights, Michigan). Malinowski finished with a trio of three-point baskets and a game total of 15 points. Steffen added 13, and Jacques Donaldson (South Bend, Indiana) chipped in 4.
The Saints lost the opening contest 77-42, but walked away knowing some ideas on which areas to build on and what needs improvement. The Saints will have little turnaround time, however, as Cornerstone University comes knocking on the Pfeil Center doors Friday night at 7:00 PM.
