Women's Basketball Falls to Golden Eagles
Women's Basketball - Fri, Oct. 28, 2011
(Notre Dame, Indiana) Looking for a bounce-back performance after Wednesday night's loss, the Saints showed new life against the Cornerstone University Golden Eagles Friday night at the Pfeil Center.
The Saints were led again by sophomore forward Lindsey Steffen (Nappanee, Indiana) who scored 17 points, passed out 4 assists, and grabbed 9 rebounds, and sophomore guard Megan Eve (Scottsburg, Indiana) who added 16 points and 3 steals.
The Saints fell into an early hole, allowing the Golden Eagles to lead for most of the first half, holding a 21-12 advantage on Holy Cross halfway through the opening period, and took a 42-25 lead into the break.
The Saints were determined to fight back, however, getting to within five points of CU halfway through the second half when Lindsey Steffen was fouled while in the process of grabbing a rebound. Steffen made both of her free-throws to bring the Saints within striking distance at 46-41.
Steffen kept the jumpers coming, and Holy Cross was down just 4 points with 9:42 remaining in the game, but CU had other plans and finished the game on a 14-5 run which took away any ideas the Saints had for a comeback.
Junior Lauren Malinowski (Dearborn Heights, Michigan) had a quiet night offensively, but managed to dish out 6 assists, pull down 2 rebounds, and record 3 steals in 38 minutes.
The Saints greatly improved their shooting skills compared to Wednesday night's game, and shot 33% from the field for the game and made 71% of their free-throws. Defensively, the Saints were able to hold a high-octane Golden Eagles attack in check for most of the game.
The Saints drop to 0-2 on the year, and will face neighboring arch-rival Indiana University-South Bend Tuesday night at the Pfeil Center at 7:00 PM.
