#13 Cougars Too Much For Saints
Women's Basketball - Wed, Nov. 23, 2011
The #13 Cougars, winners of 5 games so far this season and a member of the CCAC Division I, took control of the game early and never looked back.
St. Xavier had all 18 of their players score at least 2 points, and had four of their women in double figures. The Cougars shot 50% from the field as a team, including 42% from behind the arc. The Cougars jumped out to a 46-24 halftime lead, and never let the Saints crawl back into contention.
Holy Cross protected the glass throughout the game (40 St. X rebounds against 35 HC), but turned the ball over 29 times. Turnovers have been a big problem for the Saints early on in the season. The normally consistent 3-point shooting of the Saints fell through Tuesday night, as the Saints made just 3-of-18 attempts, but they did convert on 14-of-17 free throws, good for 82%.
Holy Cross' Lauren Malinowski (Dearborn Heights, Michigan) led all scorers with 20 points, an also had 2 assists to go with 3 steals in the game. Sophomore Lindsey Steffen (Nappanee, Indiana) scored 14 and had 9 assists.
Francesca McCarthy (Terre Haute, Indiana) had a solid outing, recording 8 points, 3 boards, 4 assists, and a steal. Sophomore Megan Eve (Scottsburg, Indiana) also added 8 points and 3 rebounds. Angela Byrd (Harvey, Illinois) recorded 7 points and 5 steals.
The Saints had difficulty stopping St. Xavier's Mary Kusner, who rattled the Saints with 16 points, 7 rebounds, an assist, a block, and 3 steals in just 19 minutes.
The Cougars won the game 94-65, and improved to 6-1. The Saints fall to 1-7, and face Taylor's University this Saturday afternoon at home. The game is scheduled to tip at 1:00 PM.
