(Notre Dame, Indiana) The Saints continued CCAC play this afternoon by hosting the Judson University Eagles in McKenna Arena at the Pfeil Center.
The Eagles came into the contest with a record of (2-6 (0-1 CCAC)), and were trying to get a win from a Saints squad that defeated them twice in the regular season a year ago.
After trailing in the early going, the Saints put together a rally midway through the first half, and took the lead 13-12 on a 3-pointer by Mary Fitzgerald (Livonia, Michigan), after a feed from sophomore Jillian DeLucia (Fishers, Indiana), who was seeing her first significant playing time after beginning the season with an injury.
The Eagles responded with a run of their own, taking the lead 21-16 after a couple of layups on the break. The Saints kept the damage to a minimum, and started chipping away at the deficit as the opening period began to wind down. JU poured in four 3-point baskets during the remainder of the half, to stretch the lead to 34-24.
The Saints trailed 38-31 with sixteen minutes remaining in the game, before Kristin Nitka (Chicago, Illinois) and Maggie Gondeck (Michigan City, Indiana) went on an 11-2 run for the Saints, who pulled in front, going up 42-40 on Nitka's 3-point basket. Holy Cross never trailed afterwards, riding the momentum for a 57-53 victory over the Eagles of JU.
The always reliable Lindsey Steffen (Nappanee, Indiana) again accounted for a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Steffen also added 6 assists and a steal. Junior guard Lauren Malinowski (Dearborn Heights, Michigan) was also in double digits for the Saints, scoring 11 points and dishing out 4 assists.
Francesca McCarthy (Terre Haute, Indiana) turned in some quality minutes as well, scoring 7 points, grabbing 5 boards, and recording 2 steals. Sophomore Megan Eve (Scottsburg, Indiana) had two clutch triples totaling 6 points, and Mary Fitzgerald accounted for 5.
The Saints move to 2-9 on the year overall, and temporarily claim at least a tie for second place in the CCAC Division II standings, at 1-1. The women return to action at home on December 8th against Andrews University in a non-conference matchup. Tip is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
