Women Power Past Andrews
Women's Basketball - Thu, Dec. 8, 2011
Sophomore Megan Eve
(Notre Dame, Indiana) The women's basketball team was back in action tonight against the Cardinals of nearby Andrews University. The Saints were looking to get back into the win column after a loss at Indiana University-Northwest Tuesday evening in Gary. This was the first ever meeting between the two schools.
The Saints were playing their second consecutive non-conference opponent in Andrews University Thursday night, taking a break from CCAC play, where they currently sit in third place.
The Saints made their presence known early, as sophomore Megan Eve (Scottsburg, Indiana) put on a shooting clinic by scoring 14 consecutive points early on opening up a 20-2 lead midway through the opening period. The Cardinals could not keep pace with the Saints, as they shot just 29% from the field.
The Saints controlled the game in all ways during the first half, and took a 36-17 lead into halftime. The second half was more of contest, as Andrews shot 54% from the floor and outscored the Saints 33-31. It would not matter, however, as the Cardinals never crept within striking distance for the rest of the night, and the Saints prevailed 67-50.
Megan Eve finished with 19 points, including 5-9 from behind the arc. Sophomore Lindsey Steffen (Nappanee, Indiana) scored 15 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, tossed out 3 assists, and had 4 blocks in the game. Jacques Donaldson (South Bend, Indiana) came off the bench and scored 8 points, and Mariah Salazar (South Bend, Indiana) added 6.
"I was happy with the girls and the way they played tonight", head coach Aimee Litka stated after the game, "We did a lot of things right, but we also have some time to improve on some other things, too."
The Saints improve to (3-10) on the year, and resume conference play after a short hiatus December 17th at Purdue Calumet. The next Saints home game is January 7th at 3:00 PM against Cardinal Stritch University.
