(Mishawaka, Indiana) The annual Bethel Tournament continued Friday as the host Pilots of Bethel College faced off against the Saints.
Holy Cross was looking to avenge its one-point opening night loss against the Pilots back in November. The Pilots defeated the Saints 68-67 November 2nd at McKenna Arena.
Before a crowd of almost 700, the Saints were step for step with the athletic Pilots, who entered the contest with a record of 8-3. Bethel took a 43-35 lead into the half after a back-and-forth first half which saw 5 ties and 5 lead changes. The 8 point deficit was the biggest the Saints faced during the first half.
The Saints kept the game competitive during the first half of the second period, as Dane Okuda's (Huntington Beach, California) 3-point bucket brought the Saints with 6 points at 57-51 with 10:51 remaining in the game.
It was all Bethel for the remainder of the game, as the Pilots followed with a run that point the Saints out of sight for the remaining 10 minutes of regulation. Bethel rode the momentum and closed out the Saints 84-73.
Holy Cross had four players score in double figures, as Okuda finished with 14, J.T. Breveard (South Bend, Indiana) scored 20, Yama Kader (Mission Viejo, California) chipped in 13, and Taylor Williams (South Bend, Indiana) added 10. Zoe Bauer (Culver, Indiana) scored 8 points and grabbed 4 rebounds.
Despite two close calls this season, Holy Cross has yet to defeat cross town rival Bethel College. This game was the final meeting between the schools for this season. The loss drops the Saints to (2-9) on the year.
