(Notre Dame, IN) The Holy Cross Men's Basketball Team won a school record 3rd straight game and 5th overall for the season beating the visiting Brescia University Bearcats Wednesday night 77-65.
Head Coach Bob Schermerhorn didn't really know what to expect from his guys Wednesday night as the team was on a two game winning streak, but that streak was put on hold during the Christmas Holiday.
He got what every coached wants coming out of a break. The Saints looked energeized and rejuvinated beating a stingy Brescia Universtiy team that was .500 heading into McKenna Arena tonight 77-65.
The game was fought hard in the first half as both teams exchanged buckets, and the lead on either side never got bigger than six points. The Saints would push the advantage at halftime to 3 points leading 33-30.
"I told our boys that if we came out in the second half and pushed the energy level up on them that we would be successful. I thought Brescia was a talented team, but if we played well in the second half we could get a much deserved win," said Head Coach Bob Schermerhorn.
Listening to their coach the Saints came out with a new vigor in the second half holding a 20 point lead midway through the second half. The Bearcats would not back down, however, hitting two three pointers in a row with just over 2 minutes remaining and cutting the lead to nine points.
Senior point guard J.T. Breveard (South Bend, IN) hit some clutch free throws down the stretch extending the lead back up to fourteen points, and seemingly put the game out of reach for the visiting Bearcats.
Senior Taylor Williams (South Bend, IN) led four Saints in double figures with 17 points, and also added 13 rebounds on the night to round out the double-double. Williams is currently sitting at 5th in the country (NAIA Division II) in rebounds per game at 11.0, and 3rd in the country at total rebounds with 143.
Junior Yama Kader (Mission Viejo, California) who was named CCAC player of the week last week averaging 29 points a game added in 15 points, and also chipped in 7 rebounds. Newcomer Michael VanderPloeg (Kalamazoo, Michigan) chipped in 16 points off the bench, and Breveard rounded out the scorers in double figures with 11 points on the night, and also went 4-4 from the line late in the game to clinch the victory.
Myron Christian led the Bearcats with 16 points, and guard Hunter Rowe had 12 points as well to help pace Brescia. Brescia is now 6-7 on the season.
"This was a huge win for us. We have won 3 straight which is a school record, and we already have achieved the most wins ever in a season with 5 after winning this game. I couldn't be more happy and proud of the guys tonight. They really worked hard, and they have deserved the success we have had late in this month," said Coach Schermerhorn.
The Saints are off for a couple of days, but return to action on January 4th where they visit fellow conference foe Purdue University North Central. Holy Cross is 5-9 overall and 1-2 in the CCAC.
Their next home game is January 7th where they play a double-header with women against visiting Cardinal Stritch. The women's game is at 3:00 p.m. and the men's game will follow at 5:00 p.m. at McKenna Arena in the Pfeil Center.
