(Notre Dame, IN) The Holy Cross Men's Basketball Team hosted Cardinal Stritch who going into this Saturday were atop the CCAC Standings with a perfect 4-0 record.
The Wolves of Cardinal Stritch would keep that perfect record as they snapped a record setting four game winning streak by the Saints beating Holy Cross 82-62 at McKenna Arena in the Pfeil Center this evening.
The game was a see-saw battle from the start as both teams traded baskets and leads for much for the first part of the first half. Then Cardinal Stritch finally found some breathing room. The game was tied at 12-12 midway through the half, and the Wolves went on 9-0 run widening the margin to 21-12 in just over a minute of play.
The lead was cut to 6 points after a three pointer by junior Michael VanderPloeg (Kalamazoo, MI). That was the closest they got as Cardinal Stritch finished the half on a 19-9 run. Cardinal Stritch went into the locker room leading 40-26.
"We had trouble all afternoon handling them down in the paint. They have two quality big men in Woelffer and Singh, and they gave us fits all day. I thought we played well in the first half, but we just shot poorly. I thought if we could make some shots we might be able to get back in this thing," said Head Coach Bob Schermerhorn.
The Saints came out motivated in the second half cutting the 14 point lead to 6 points in just 3 minutes. Seven straight points by junior Yama Kader (Mission Viejo, CA) allowed the Saints to be right back into it, and after a three pointer by senior J.T. Breveard (South Bend, IN) Cardinal Stritch was forced to call a timeout and rally the troops.
Rally is exactly what the Wolves did as the Saints never got closer than that 6 point deficit early in the second half. Cardinal Stritch went on a 6-0 run pushing the lead back up to twelve points, and never really looked back from there. In the end, the Wolves would add 8 more points to that lead as Cardinal Stritch beat Holy Cross today 82-62 snapping a four game winning streak by the Saints entering today's game.
Current CCAC Player of the Week Taylor Williams (South Bend, IN) continued his great play as of late finishing the game with his ninth double-double of the season scoring 12 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Kader finished with 17 points after scoring none in the first half, and VanderPloeg finished with 7 points and dishing out 5 assists.
"I was proud of the run our boys made over the last four games. I thought we could have played better today, but I think it is important to move on to the next game as we are right in thick of the conference here, and we need to be able to bounce back from games like this, and answer with wins," said Coach Schermerhorn.
The Saints are now 6-10 overall, and 2-3 in the CCAC. They host Calumet St. Joseph on January 11th at 7:30 p.m. The Saints will be playing after the girls game at 5:30 p.m. at McKenna Arena in the Pfeil Center.
