(Notre Dame, IN) The Holy Cross Men's Basketball Team took on the visiting Peregrines of Purdue Calumet Wednesday night in battle of CCAC opponents.
The way the game went for about thirty minutes it appeared as if nothing could go right for the Saints, and everything was going right for the visiting Peregrines. The Saints were down as many as fourteen points in the second half, but battled back the last ten minutes to win a crucial game in the CCAC standings 90-83.
It was all Purdue Calumet early on as the jumped out to an early 8-2 lead. Holy Cross looked out of synch, and it appeared that the Peregrines were playing the type of ball early on to win a big game on the road in the CCAC.
Purdue Calumet pushed the lead to as high as eighteen points with just over three minutes remaining in the half. Holy Cross pushed back a little at the end of half as they were only down fourteen points heading into the halftime with the score 53-39 in favor of Purdue Calumet.
Senior Taylor Williams (South Bend, IN) and freshman Darrell McIntyre (Indianapolis, IN) led the Saints in the first half with 10 points a piece.
The Saints needed to come out of halftime with more energy, but midway through the second half the Peregrines still had a fourteen point lead. After a timeout by Holy Cross it appeared as if it was gut check time for the team, and they responded with a renewed vigor.
They went on a 21-5 over the next five minutes to take their first lead of the game with the score at 70-68 with just over seven minutes remaining in the game. Their first lead was enough as Holy Cross never gave it up, and pushed it to as many as seven points with just over two minutes remaining in the game.
Purdue Calumet was not done, however, as they closed the gap to one point with twenty three seconds in the game. A key lay-up by freshman Zoe Bauer (Culver, IN), and a timely steal on the ensuing inbounds pass by junior Michael VanderPloeg (Kalamazoo, MI) iced the game for the Saints with the final score at 90-83 in favor of Holy Cross.
"Good teams win when they don't play well. We did not play well for about thirty three minutes of that game, but the guys dug down deep and found a way to win tonight. This was a great win for us, and I am truly proud of the boys, said Head Coach Bob Schermerhorn.
Junior Yama Kader led the Saints with 20 points. He was instrumental in the late comeback as15 of those points came in the second half. Williams finished with 17 points, and also led the Saints with 9 rebounds on the evening. VanderPloeg netted 13 points, and McIntyre chipped in 12 points respectively. Senior J.T.
