Seniors Taylor Williams, Zac Cook, Michelle Sheehan, Andrew Tullis, Adam Dobrzykowski, J.T. Breveard, and Adam Onderdonk.
It was a Senior Day, and everyone in the building wanted the Saints to send out the seniors with a win. The Saints did not disappoint as they beat Trinity International 78-65 Saturday afternoon.
The game was back and forth early on as the Saints led, but could not push the lead to more than four points midway through the first half. The Trojans, however, fought back gaining a five point lead of their own.
The Saints resolve and poise took over the rest of the half as they used an 8-0 run to take a three point lead with just over eight minutes remaining. Ultimately, the game went tied into the locker room with the score 35-35. Neither team wanted to give the other an advantage into the locker room, and it looked as if we were heading down to the wire the rest of the game.
"I thought we could have a done a better job closing out the shooters in the first half. We were rebounding well, but we were just giving them too many easy buckets. I felt that if we could clamp down on defense we could win this game," said Head Coach Bob Schermerhorn.
Junior Yama Kader (Mission Viejo, CA) led all scorers in the first half with 13 points. Senior J.T. Breveard (South Bend, IN) added 7 points, and senior Taylor Williams (South Bend, IN) had 9 first half rebounds.
It was all Saints in the second half as they took the lead a minute and a half into it and never relinquished it for the rest of the game. The Saints used a 10-0 run midway through the second half to push the lead up to thirteen points. That run seemed to have put the Trojans away for the game.
The Saints pushed the lead to as many as sixteen points, and in the end the seniors got their final win of the regular season beating Trinity International 78-65.
Kader led the Saints with 19 points on the day. Freshman Darrell McIntyre (Indianapolis, IN) had a great second half netting 15 points. Breveard chipped in 12 points in the win as well. Williams hauled in a school record 18 rebounds in the win, and also netted 7 points.
"I am really proud of our guys, and the seniors today. Our guys worked so hard to get to thirteen wins and fourth place in the CCAC. Our team has come a long way, and if weren't for our 6 seniors we wouldn't have had the success we have had this year," said Coach Schermerhorn.
The Saints honored six seniors on the day. J.T. Breveard (South Bend, IN) Zac Cook (South Bend, IN), Adam Dobrzykowski (South Bend, IN), Adam Onderdonk (South Bend, IN), Andrew Tullis (Orland, IN), and Taylor Williams (South Bend, IN).
The Saints improve to 13-16 on the season and 7-7 in the CCAC. With that win, Holy Cross improves to a tie for third place in the conference. They lost the tiebreaker to Judson so they officially finish fourth. They will host Trinity Christian this Tuesday at McKenna Arena in the Pfeil Center at 7:00 p.m. This game is a CCAC quarterfinal match-up so please come on out and cheer on your Saints!
