(Notre Dame, IN) The Holy Cross Baseball Team took on the visiting Scarlet Hawks of Illinois Tech at Coveleski Stadium tonight.
In game one of the matchup the Saints held on for their second conference win of the season by beating Illinois Tech 6-4. In the second game game the Saints battled back from allowing eleven runs in the first inning, but came up just short losing 13-4.
Freshman Pat Gullickson (Chanhassen, MN) had a fantastic game in game one on the mound pitching a complete game allowing nine hits, two walks, and three earned runs.
Junior centerfielder Danie Wawrzusin went 3-4 with two rbi's in the game including the go ahead rbi in the fourth knocking in sophomore Jackson Hallahan (Silver Lake, MN) to break a 3-3 tie. Sophomore Steve Bunnell (Carlsbad, CA) went a perfect 2-2 on the day from his spot as a dh, and freshman Michael Pizzuto (Sarasota, FL) conitnued his great play as of late going 2-4 on the day.
In game two of the evening the Saints struggled early as they gave up eleven runs in the first inning to spot Illinois Tech an 11-0 lead. The Saints battled back to cut the lead to 11-7 heading in the fifth inning. The Scarlet Hawks, however, rebounded by scoring two runs in the inning and stopping the momentum of the surging Saints.
Sophomore Jacob Wood did a great job in relief as he came in after the eleven run onslaught to pitch three scoreless innings allowing three hits and one walk.
Pizzuto went 3-3 with a walk and a rbi. Freshman Paul Kappaz (Grosse Pointe, MI) went 2-4 on the day with one run batted in for the Saints, and freshman Blake Comella (Glendale, AZ) went 2-4 with two runs batted in on the evening.
The Saints are now 4-14 and 2-3 in the conference. Their next game is a doubleheader at Saint Xavier on Saturday March 24th. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
