Sophomore Ben Bournay gets ready to take a pitch during the weekend series against Saint Xavier.
Baseball - Sun, Mar. 25, 2012
(Notre Dame, IN)  The Holy Cross Baseball Team took on Saint Xavier over the weekend in a three game CCAC Series.

The first two games were played at Saint Xavier, but today's game was played at Coveleski Stadium.  All three games started out alright for the Saints, but big innings in all three games allowed the Cougars of Saint Xavier to take control.

Game One

In game one, the Saints were within stricking distance as it was only 4-0 entering the fifth inning.  The Cougars, however, mounted a five run fifth inning to seize the momentum in the game, and beat the Saints 10-2.

Sophomore Ben Bournay (St. Joseph, Michigan) led the Saints going 1 for 3 with 2 runs batted in for the game.  Freshman Trevor Hurley (Sioux Falls, South Dakota) had a nice game for the Saints going 2 for 3 on the day at the plate.

Senior Patrick Huyge (Grand Haven, Michigan) got the loss on the day allowing nine hits, nine earned runs, and 1 walk in 4.2 innings pitched.

Game Two

In game two the Saints jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but the Saints relinquished that lead in the second inning as they allowed nine runs in the bottom half of the inning.  Those were the only runs the Saints gave up for the game, but it was enough as the Saints lost 9-4 in the second game of the doubleheader.

Sophomore Michael Pizzuto (Sarasota, Florida) led the Saints at the plate going 3 for 4 and scoring two runs in the game.  Hurley went 1 for 3, and batted in three of the four runs for the Saints in the second game.

Sophomore Steve Bunnell (Carlsbad, CA) got the loss in the second game.  He allowed four hits and eight earned runs in 1.2 innings pitched.

Game 3

Freshman Pat Gullickson (Chanhassen, Minnesota) started out the game pitching very well for the Saints as it was 2-1 in favor of the Cougars through four innings of the play.  A three run fifth inning proved to be the dagger for the Saints as they lost 9-1 in the Sunday home matchup with Saint Xavier.

Sophomore Jackson Hallahan (Silver Lake, Minnesota) went one for three on the day, and Bunnell went one for four as the Saints were limited to just six hits all afternoon.

Gullickson gave up seven hits and three earned runs over 5.1 innings pitched.

The Saints are now 4-17 on the year, and 2-6 in the CCAC.  Their next game is Wednesday March 25th at Coveleski Stadium against Judson who sits at first place in the North Division of the CCAC.  It is a doubleheader, and first pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
