(Notre Dame, Ind.) The Holy Cross College women's soccer team opened up their 2012 season with a 3-0 loss to Lawrence Technological University on Wednesday evening. The match was the first ever between the schools, and the first match at the newly designed field on the campus of Holy Cross.
The Saints came out and played a very tough first half against the Blue Devils. At the end of the half, the Saints had outshot the Blue Devils 10 to 8. Holy Cross junior goalkeeper, Aileen Clouse (Beavercreek, Ohio) tallied 5 saves at the end of the half.
As the second half had gotten underway, it appeared the Saints players had grown fatigued as they only had one available sub for the entire game. Over the course of the last thirty minutes of the game, Lawrence Tech's Lisa Zaffina had notched 3 goals.
Head coach, Carlos Reynolds, was encouraged with what he saw despite the 3-0 final score. "The first game of the year is always a difficult one to judge," stated Coach Reynolds. "I felt we were definitely able to see some good things over the course of the game. The team displayed the type of confidence they have shown in practice. We will get back to work and focus on refining the solid moments I thought we showed tonight."
The home opener for the women's soccer team was a big success for the entire Holy Cross College community. Over one-hundred people were in attendance of the game, and the atmosphere set the tone for what to expect this season now that the Saints get to play their home games on campus.
"I thought the environment was excellent," said Coach Reynolds. "I look forward to having the entire Holy Cross community coming out to enjoy our games every time we get to play at home. It was truly amazing to see all the support we had for our first match."
The Saints women's soccer team returns to action on Monday, August 27th against St. Mary-of-the-Woods College. The game will be played on the campus of Holy Cross and will kick-off at 5:00pm EST.
