Women's Soccer - Mon, Aug. 27, 2012

(Notre Dame, Ind.) The Holy Cross College women's soccer team enjoyed their first victory of the season over St. Mary of the Woods College on Monday night.

After falling behind early 1-0 off of a Kylee White goal for the Pomeroys, the Saints fought back and tied it at 1-1 off the foot of freshmen Kianna Smith (San Diego, Calif.). The Saints then took control of the game and never looked back.

With 42 seconds remaining in the first half, senior Jessica Pletcher (Plymouth, Ind.) gave the Saints their first lead of the season off of a pass from freshmen midfielder Zayra Valencia (South Bend, Ind.). The Saints then entered the half with a 2-1 lead and a 29-5 shots advantage.

"The number of shots we were able to get tonight tells us that we had control of the game," said head coach Carlos Reynolds. "After our last game, our message was to take the shots when we have the opportunity to do so. Now,  our next will be to continue working on getting more of the shots on target."

The second half demonstrated much of the same from the first 45 minutes; the Saints were able to control the time of the possession, and in turn, out shoot the Pomeroys 21-3 in the half totaling their season high 50 shots (22 on goal). Sophomore forward Leah Trattles (Holland, Mich.) netted the icing goal for the Saints which gave them a 3-1 lead.

"This game was a great test for us," said Saints head coach Carlos Reynolds. "After getting down early 1-0, we were able to keep our focus and continue to work out there. Kianna was terrific coming off the bench and scoring right away. We thought Stacy Rubio (Northlake, Ill.) played an incredible game on both ends of the field as she was able to control the possession for us and set up her teammates. Overall, I was very impressed with how we were able to maintain possession over the course of the game. The constant communication between the girls helped them get in the right spots to win the battles on the offensive and defensive end."

The Saints will hit the road this Friday to take on Aquinas College, and will return home to face neighbor Saint Mary's College on Tuesday, September 4th at 5:00pm EST. For continuous coverage of the Holy Cross women's soccer team, and all other Saints athletics continue to check out!
