Men's Soccer - Fri, Sep. 7, 2012

(Upland, Ind.) The Holy Cross Saints men's soccer team traveled Friday night to Upland, Indiana to face #21 ranked Taylor University. The match is the first of two for the Saints this weekend as part of the IWU/Taylor Classic. The Saints fell to Taylor in overtime 2-1.

Holy Cross entered the match coming off of their home opener 13-0 win over Great Lakes Christian College and looked to face their first major test of the season facing the nationally ranked Taylor Trojans.

The Saints got off to a quick start as junior defensemen Thomas Hendzel (Lisle, Ill.) netted a header off of a corner kick from Alex Clarke (Liverpool, England) giving himself his first goal of the year, and a 1-0 Saints lead.

At the end of the first half, the Saints and Trojans went into the half with 6 shots a piece, and a 1-0 Saints lead.

Holy cross continued to play strong throughout the 2nd half until Danny Cawley from Taylor netted the tying goal in the 82nd minute. The goal from Cawley pushed the game to overtime where the Saints struggled to get a shot on net, and Taylor was able to net the game winning goal off of the leg of Jordan Grant.

The loss was a tough one for the team, but coach Gallo found a lot of positives with how his team performed tonight.

"I'm extremely proud of how the guys played tonight," said Saints head coach Omar Gallo. "We played 105 minutes with a nationally ranked team in a tough environment. These are the types of performances that put a team on the map, and I really feel this years team is looking to set the tone that we are going to give every team we play a tough game."

Tonight's loss to Taylor drops the Saints to (1-1) on the year.

The Saints will be back in action tomorrow night as they travel to Marian, Indiana to face Indiana Wesleyan University and closes out the IWU/Taylor classic. The game is available through webcast and begins at 7:00pm EST.
