(Indianapolis, Ind.) The Holy Cross Saints men's soccer team fell to 2-3 on the season after Saturday's tough loss against the Marian Knights. Despite outshooting the Knights over the course of the game, the Saints found themselves down 2-0 into the 2nd half. Still without freshmen goalkeeper Victor Navarro (South Bend, Ind.), freshmen forward Simon Soto (South Bend, Ind.) filled the position.
The Saints offense came out strong as they were able to get a number of chances throughout the first half of the game outshooting the Knights 6-4 at the end of the 1st half. Marian connected on their opportunities tallying two first half goals from Caleb Kolby.
The Saints went into the half trailing the Knights by a score of 2-0.
Holy Cross began the 2nd half much like they did in the 1st, as they were able to get a number of chances on the Knights goalkeeper Alex Ghattas. It wasn't until the last few minutes of the match when freshmen Troy Padgett (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) notched his 6th goal of the season at the 83rd minute.
The comeback fell short when junior captain Niko Jelicic (Sucuraj, Croatia) took the final shot of the match in the 89th minute that missed just wide.
Garbhan Grant (Letterkenny, Ireland) led the Saints with 3 shots on net, including 5 of the 16 shot attempts the Saints took.
Goalkeeper Simon Soto finished the game with 2 saves in his first career action in net.
"I'm proud of the fact that the guys never gave up after being down 2-0 at the end of the 1st half," said Saints coach Omar Gallo. "Our problem right now is that we're not playing a full 90 minutes. I am confident our guys will get it together come conference time. We will rebound from this game and look to keep our undefeated home streak going this Wednesday; it's our last game before conference and we definitely want to go into conference on a high note."
The Saints will finish their non-conference schedule at home against Huntington University on Wednesday, September 19th at 4:00pm EST.
