(Bridgeview, Ill.) The Holy Cross Saints women's soccer team continued CCAC play Saturday afternoon with the Roosevelt Lakers. After 90 minutes of scoreless the soccer, the Saints took the Lakers to overtime. After 20 extra minutes of play, the Saints came out with a 0-0 tie.
The Saints entered the match with Roosevelt coming off of 4 straight CCAC losses.
The first half of play was very competitive; the Saints were able to get their offense going and get some early shot attempts. At the end of the first half, the Lakers outshot the Saints by a narrow margin of 6-4.
In the second half of play, Roosevelt was able to control the tempo of the game, and get a lot of shots at Saints goalkeeper Aileen Clouse (Beavercreek, Ohio).
It was in the 81st minute of play when the Lakers would get their best opportunity to capitalize on their chances; a foul in the box by the Saints awarded Roosevelt with a penalty kick that was stopped by Clouse.
"Aileen was tremendous for us," said Saints head coach Carlos Reynolds. "She was able to come up big for us all game, and it doesn't become any more difficult than facing a penalty kick with less than ten minutes to play in the game."
The Saints were able to hold on after the first 90 minutes to send the game to overtime, their first overtime appearance of the season. Shots favored the Lakers at the end of regulation with a 16-7 advantage.
In the first overtime, a shot from Stacy Rubio (Northlake, Ill.) gave the Saints their final opportunity of the match. The save by Lakers goalkeeper Sydney Self was the final shot either team would see. The match ended after the second overtime with a 0-0 tie.
"I'm really proud of how hard the girls fought throughout the game," said Saints head coach Carlos Reynolds. "It's never easy playing on the road, and I thought the girls were very composed and played an overall solid game. We will look to continue to build off this game and finish the season strong."
The tie for the Saints ends a 4 game losing streak, and gives them their first point in conference play this season.
Aileen Clouse finished the game with her 2nd shutout of the season.
The Saints will return home on Wednesday, October 10th when they take on the 9th ranked Tigers of Olivet Nazarene University. Kick-off is set for 4:00pm EST.
