The Saints dropped their 1st home match of season Wednesday evening against Cardinal Stritch.

(Notre Dame, Ind.) The Holy Cross Saints men's soccer team continued Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play Wednesday evening against the Wolves of Cardinal Stritch University. After a 1-0 1st half lead, followed by a delay due to lightning, Cardinal Stritch rebounded to score 3 unanswered goals in the 2nd half. The game was called due to weather after the 70th minute of action.

 

The second match of a double header at Saints Field received much of the talked about bad weather conditions. Just 5 minutes into the game, lightning struck for the 1st time, and the game was delayed for nearly 40 minutes.

Once play resumed, the Saints were able to get some offensive momentum going as well as a big break.

In the 28th minute of action, freshmen forward Alberto Marchi (Hudson, Ohio) crashed towards the net when a Cardinal Stritch player knocked the ball into their own goal trying to clear the ball. After review and confirmation from the referees, the Saints had a 1-0 lead.

It was during the 2nd half of play when the heavy weather came back; heavy rain and gusty winds continued over the remainder of the game.

Cardinal Stritch came out very strong getting a number of early chances that were stopped by Saints goalkeeper Victor Navarro (South Bend, Ind.).

In the 65th minute of action, the Wolves were able to breakthrough and get the games tying goal. Just under 2 minutes later, a foul outside the box gave Stritch a free kick where they executed and took a 2-1 lead.

The Wolves would get one more goal in the 68th minute that made the game a 3-1 deficit for the Saints. This was their 3rd straight goal over a span of under 3 minutes.

When the match reached the 70th minute of action, the severe weather reached its peak and the match was stopped giving the Wolves a 3-1 victory over the Saints.

The loss for the Saints ends their unbeaten streak at home this season and drops the Saints to 7-5-2 (4-2-2 CCAC).

Holy Cross will continue conference play on Saturday as they take on the Trolls of Trinity Christian College. The match is set to begin at 3:00pm EST.

The Saints will return home for their final regular season home match, and senior night, on Saturday, October 27th. The game will begin at 4:00pm EST with a pregame ceremony honoring senior players Luis Delgado (Lexington, Ky.) and Briant Estrella (Ameca Jalisco, Mexico).
