(Whiting, Ind.) The Holy Cross Saints fell to fellow Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) opponent Calumet College of St. Joseph 3-1 on Wednesday afternoon. The loss brings the Saints to 1-13-1 (0-9-1 CCAC) on the season.
During the 36th minute of the 1st half, the Saints ended their 9 game scoreless streak off of the foot of freshman Kianna Smith (San Diego, Calif.). The goal for Smith was the 1st of her career at Holy Cross, and tied the match at 1.
The Crimson Wave regained the lead 2-1 shortly after the Saints tied in the 43rd minute of the 1st half, and pulled away with their 3rd and final goal off of a penalty kick with under a minute remaining in the match.
Junior goalkeeper Aileen Clouse (Beavercreek, Ohio) finished the match facing 17 shots (7 on net) and saving 4.
"I thought the girls played a very tough game," said Saints head coach Carlos Reynolds. "After falling down 1-0 we were able to tie it up in the first half and be in the game the entire way. It was a good step in the right direction for our team, and I'm looking forward to seeing how we finish the season."
As the 2012 season is winding down, the Saints will close out with 2 home matches beginning on Saturday, October 27th at 1:00pm EST against the 19th ranked Eagles of Judson University.
Senior night will take place the following Monday, October 29th at 4:00pm against Andrews University where the Saints will honor their 3 seniors: Lindsey Swaim (Elkhart, Ind.), Jessica Pletcher (Plymouth, Ind.), and Angie Friese (Honolulu, Hawaii).
