Women's Basketball - Sun, Dec. 2, 2012

(Notre Dame, Ind.) A strong start to the game which had the Saints clinging to an early 10 point lead halfway the first half was interrupted by the strong play of Crimson Wave forward Raven Phillips on Saturday afternoon. The Saints, 3-7 (1-5 CCAC), fell to the Crimson Wave 70-63.

The Saints started off fast after a Lindsey Steffen (Nappanee, Ind.) layup helped cap off an early 15-4 run to start the game for the Saints. The Saints were able to hold a 10 point lead halfway through the first half leading the Crimson Wave 23-13.

The Crimson Wave, however, would respond to the early success from Holy Cross and outscore the Saints 23-11 over the last ten minutes of the first half. The Saints found themselves trailing for the first time all game 36-34 at the break.

Lindsey Steffen scored 13 points for the Saints in the first half on 6-7 shooting from the field. As a whole, the Crimson Wave outshot the Saints hitting 48.4% from the field compared to the Saints 38.7%.

As the second half began, the Crimson Wave continued to score inside off the leadership of Raven Phillips.

The Saints found themselves trailing by 13 points with 5:58 to go in the game.

A layup by senior guard Angela Byrd (Harvey, Ill.) cut the Crimson Wave's lead to 66-62 with 1:34 left in the game, but it wasn't enough for the Saints to pull off the second half comeback. A free-throw by Karina Robinson gave the Crimson Wave a 7 point lead with 25 seconds left and was the last point scored in the game.

The Saints, 3-7 (1-5 CCAC), fell to the Crimson Wave 70-63. Raven Phillips led the way for Calumet College of St. Joseph's finishing with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

"I was very happy with how the beginning of the game went as we were able to get going quickly and build up a double-digit lead," said head coach Aimee Niespodziany. "As the half went on, we struggled a little bit to score the basketball and they were able to capitalize on the majority of their chances. We need to do a better job of knocking down our free-throws when it comes down to it."

The Saints shot 53.8% from the foul line (14-26) over the course of the game.

Senior Lauren Malinowski (Dearborn Heights, Mich.) led the Saints with 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists on the game playing 38 minutes.

Francesca McCarthy (Terre Haute, Ind.) finished with 13 points and a team high 8 rebounds.

The Saints, 3-7 (1-5 CCAC), will continue their home stand on Tuesday, December 4th with a matchup between #15 Bethel College. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
