Holy Cross - Mon, Apr. 6, 2009
(Rochester, MN) This past weekend, Holy Cross student Joey Cochran competed in the 2009 ACUI Collegiate National Table Tennis Championships in Minnesota.  Joey went unbeaten in the early rounds against players from Georgia Tech, Texas, Ferris State, Texas Wesleyan, and Lindenwood.
It wasn't until the men's quarterfinals that Joey dropped a game, but still was able to advance to the final four defeating Carlos Alvarado Perilla of Columbia University (and formerly a world top 200 player), 3 games to 1.

Joey finally met his match in the men's semifinal against Athens Olympian Mark Hazinski of Texas Wesleyan.  Not only was Mark too strong for Joey, but he went on and claimed the Men's Singles and Mixed Doubles championships.

Also, the Holy Cross College table tennis team traveled to Columbus, Ohio to compete in the 2009 Arnold Fitness Festival College Table Tennis Championships in March.  This was a team event, and Holy Cross was represented by Joey and Gordy Cochran, Tyler Alge, Gabe Ribeiro, and Romulo Nobrega.

Holy Cross began the tournament by defeating the University of Buffalo and Case Western Reserve. In the semifinals, the Saints defeated three time defending tournament champion Ohio State 3-0 in the semifinals, and the University of Michigan 3-1 in the finals.

The Holy Cross team finished the 2008-09 season with an 8-1 record, including a 3-0 record against Big Ten teams.  First prize for this event is a new table which will be arriving at the Pfeil Center this week. Congratulations to these students on their fine representations of Holy Cross College!
