Women's Basketball - Thu, Jan. 31, 2013

(Whiting, Ind.) Lindsey Steffen (Nappanee, Ind.) put together an impressive 20 point and 9 rebound performance on the road Wednesday evening in Whiting, Indiana, but the Holy Cross women's basketball squad saw their two-game win streak fall by the Crimson Wave of Calumet College of St. Joseph, 68-56.

Wednesday night's Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) matchup was one the Saints will look to put in the rear view mirror as soon as possible. The Saints struggled shooting from the field over the course of the game as they manage a mere 16-for-61 (26.2%) from the floor.

An early 10-to-2 run by the Crimson Wave in the game's first five minutes had the Saints searching for answers on both ends of the floor.

After trailing by as many as 11 points late in the half, the Saints turned in a 5-to-0 run to close out the first half only trailing the Crimson Wave by six at 30-24. Holy Cross shot just 7-for-26 (26.9%) from the floor in the first half and were led by Lindsey Steffen who had 13 points and 7 rebounds.

Two early free-throws by junior Francesca McCarthy (Terre Haute, Ind.) cut the deficit to just four points. The Crimson Wave, however, would quickly answer and extend their lead once again to ten points early in the second half.

Trailing by a score of 46-34, the Saints went on an 8-to-0 run capped off by a three-pointer from senior Lauren Malinowski (Dearborn Heights, Mich.) which made it just a four point game at 46-42. Unfortunately for the Saints, this would be the closest they would get the remainder of the game as missed chances were quickly capitalized by Calumet St. Joseph and the lead was extended to as many as 16.

The Saints fell 68-56 giving the season sweep to the Crimson Wave.

Lindsey Steffen led the Saints with 20 points and 9 rebounds and was 14-for-15 from the free-throw line. Francesca McCarthy and Angela Byrd (Harvey, Ill.) each chipped in with 10 points apiece.

Dominique Edwards and Karina Robinson paved the way for the Crimson Wave combining for 44 points and 16 rebounds. Overall, the Crimson Wave's 50% (27-54) came up big as the Saints hit only 26.2% (16-61) for the game.

The Saints (9-16, 5-12 CCAC), will return to action this coming Saturday as they hit the road again to Elgin, Illinois for a conference clash with Judson University. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. EST.
