(Notre Dame, Ind.) The Holy Cross College department of athletics is pleased to announce the recognition of three Holy Cross hockey players who were nominated and named American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Academic All-Americans during the 2012-2013 season. Clairmont Ruff (Tustin, Cali.), Doni Gendel (A) (South Bend, Ind.) and Tommy Lyons (C) (Valparaiso, Ind.) each received the distinction of an Academic All-American.
In order to receive such honors, the student-athlete must achieve a grade point average of at least a 3.20 and be in their junior or senior year.
Clairmont Ruff appeared in 31 games for the Saints during his junior year and tallied career highs in assists (9) and points (14). Currently Ruff holds a 3.65 GPA and is majoring in Business at Holy Cross.
Doni Gendel appeared in 25 games for the Saints during his junior year and recorded 22 goals and 16 assists for 38 points. Gendel is second all-time in points for the Saints with 147 (76g, 71a) in 78 career games. Through his junior year, Gendel maintains a 3.3 GPA while studying Business.
Tommy Lyons wrapped up his junior season appearing in all 32 games for the Saints and serving as the team captain for the second consecutive year. During the year Lyons posted 4 goals and 25 assists for 29 points. He became the first defenseman in Saints history to record 100 career points this season and currently sits fourth all-time with 109 points (20g, 89a) in 83 career games. Through his junior year, Lyons maintains a 3.78 GPA while majoring in Business and minoring in Marketing, Communications and Sports Management.
"It's a great honor to see three of our athletes receive such recognition," stated Holy Cross Athletic Director Aimee Niespodziany. "The hard work they put in the classroom, paired with success on the playing field, exemplifies what we strive for as a department for our student-athletes. We're very proud of the success these athlets have shown throughout the course of the year to demonstrate what it means to be a student-athlete."
