(Notre Dame, Ind.) First year head coach T.J. Lyons and the Holy Cross hockey program got off to a fast start over the weekend with recruiting after signing three players for the 2013-2014 season. Nic Mensik (Granger, Ind.), Devin Nyers (Mishawka, Ind.) and Will Bauers (Villa Park, Ill.) will join the Saints for the upcoming season.
"We had a number of really talented players come to our recruit weekend and were fortunate to sign these three players," stated coach Lyons. "All three will play an important role in helping us move the program forward."
Nic Mensik joins the Saints from nearby Granger, Ind. after completing his senior season with Penn Kingsmen where he finished with eight goals and six assists (14 points) in twenty four games as a defenseman.
"I'm very excited that Nic will be a Saints next year and for years to come," coach Lyons said. "He's local kid and we're thrilled that he chose to stay close to home and join our program. He's a very versatile player with the ability to play both forward and defense which will be a great asset to our team."
Nic is the song of David and Yolanda Mensik and currently is undecided on a major.
Devin Nyers is the second local area prospect to sign with the Saints. A 2012 high school graduate from Niles High School, Nyers participated in varsity soccer for the Vikings. Nyers has played hockey for Clay and Valpo High School, Team Michiana and most recently the Orangeville Americans Junior A team. During the 2012-2013 season, Nyers finished with a 4-7 record while allowing 4.44 goals against and recording a save percentage of 88.6%.
"I'm very excited to have Devin in the fold for next year," continued coach Lyons. "Devin played for me at Valpo prior to playing two years of junior hockey in Ontario, Canada. He's a true competitor and a man of high character. He will be a great addition to our team."
Nyers was an Athletic Scholar all throughout high school and is the son of Dan Nyers and Tammy Bowman. He plans to major in Business while studying at Holy Cross.
Rounding out the Saints signees, Will Bauers joins the Saints from Villa Park, Ill. where he's currently a senior at Willowbrook High School. Bauers most recently capped off a stint with the U18 Midget Major Chicago Bruins. During six games for the Bruins, Bauers posted one goal and two assists (3 points) as a defenseman. Standing a six feet and two inches tall, coach Lyons was impressed with the type of play Bauers brought at the recruit skate.
"Will is a big guy on the blue line who is a very smart player," continued coach Lyons. "He's played in big games throughout his career, most recently in the National Tournament this past season. He was very impressive at our skate and we felt we needed to add him to our team immediately."
Will is the son of Joe Bauers and Sandy Schroat and is currently undecided on his college major.
The addition of Mensik, Nyers and Bauers gives the Saints three signees currently for next years class. On behalf of Holy Cross College Athletics, we'd like congratulate all three athletes on deciding to join the Saints next season!
