(Notre Dame, Ind.) Head coach Omar Gallo and the Holy Cross Saints men's soccer program are pleased to announce the additions of Ryongmyeong Cho (Seoul, South Korea) and Michael Maiorano (Whitby, Ontario, Canada) for the 2014 season. Both players will have two seasons of eligibility beginning in the 2013 fall season.
"I'm very excited about the signing of both Cho and Michael," stated Gallo. "Both come from a very well run program and a well known coach who shares a similar philosophy as myself. The system the boys are coming into is similar to the system they were in at Lakeland which will allow them to adapt to our program much quicker. We couldn't be more excited with the addition of these two fine student-athletes."
A fixture on the backline throughout his two years at Lakeland, Cho earned Second Team All-Conference honors as a freshman and a First Team selection this past season. The Seoul, South Korea native played and started in 17 games as a sophomore en route to National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) all-east region accolades.
During the 2011 season, Cho tallied one goal as a freshman midfielder and was selected as Lakeland's Defensive Player of the Year at the year-end banquet.
Off the field, Cho is a dean's list student and Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) all-academic team honoree. He was an S.T.A.R. student-athlete, signifying a 3.0 GPA at the end of the semester, through all four semesters at Lakeland.
"Cho brings a strong and fearful presence and will act as a leader as soon as he arrives on campus," continued Gallo. "He's one of those players that will leave it all on the field regardless of the outcome of the game. I feel that he will be one of our players that will set the level of intensity each match whether he is playing on the back line or in the middle."
Maiorano began his sophomore season as defender before transitioning to the forward spot midway through the season. The result of Mairoano's transition led to him ranking second on the team in goals (6) and third on the team in points (13). All six goals came in a span of three games including a hat-trick against Mount Union JV in mid-October. He capped off the year with a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) all-east region selection.
As a freshman, Maiorano tallied six goals and six assists to finish second on the team in points.
Michael is also a three-time S.T.A.R. student-athlete and was named to the OCCAC All-Academic team at the end of the year. He holds a 3.5 GPA at Lakeland.
"Michael is a quick and natural finisher when it comes to scoring," continued coach Gallo. "While we were able to score a goal in every game last season with the help from a number of players, we feel that Michael has the capability to score big goals to help lead us to victory. He will be the player that other teams will have to man mark which will free up our other talented players on the field. We believe that Michael's ability to finish will motivate our other attacking players to continue to put the ball in the net."
Cho and Maiorano make it four players who have signed with the Saints for the 2013 season.
The Saints open up the 2013 season in Mobile, Ala. against the University of Mobile on August 19th.
