Mount Vernon, OHIO -- The Holy Cross Saints men's soccer team hit the road for the first time in 2013 to Mount Vernon, Ohio for round one of the First-Knox Cougar Invitational where they took on the tournament host Mount Vernon Nazarene Cougars. After an intense 90 minutes of action, overtime was needed to decide the winner. The Cougars controlled the pace in the extra time and netted the game winning goal with 3:18 left in the period to give them a 1-0 victory and hand the Saints their first loss of the season.
"We played a solid game, but were unable to get the ball in the net," said 2nd year head coach Omar Gallo. "We had our chances, especially in the second half, but came up short this time."
The Cougars came out efficiently in the game's first 45 minutes outshooting the Saints 9-3. Freshman goalkeeper Iain McTurk (Copenhagen, Denmark) stopped both shots on net to keep the game knotted at 0-0 at the break.
In the second half, the Saints saw their scoring opportunities increase with the help of three corner kicks. Unfortunately, they were only able to generate four shots, one of which was on goal.
"I thought we had good energy in the second half keeping the ball in their end," continued Gallo. "As can happen, we were a little unlucky with some bounces and didn't get as many good shots on net."
With the final seconds ticking away in the second half, Saints goalkeeper Iain McTurk made a big save to send the game into overtime. McTurk finished the game with three saves.
Both the Saints and Cougars generated two shots in overtime, with the biggest shot coming in the 97th minute as the Cougars scored the game winner.
For the game, the Cougars held an 18-9 shot advantage.
"Obviously we need to some things better to get back into the win column," coach Gallo continued. "The good news is we have another game on Saturday where we can bounce back and get back on track. I know the guys will be ready to go tomorrow."
The Saints (1-1) will conclude their appearance in the First-Knox Cougar Invitational tomorrow with a 1:30 p.m. matchup against the Tigers of Georgetown (Ky.) College.
