South Bend, IND. -- The Holy Cross Saints women's golf team continued the fall season over the weekend at Blackthorn Golf Club for the 2013 Battle at Blackthorn hosted by Bethel College. After a tough 36-hole event, the Saints finished the tournament with an eighth place finish out of the 12-team field.
"I felt we did a good job improving off our first event of the year," head coach Tim Holt said. "We're starting to get more consistent on the course and I feel we're trending in the right direction as a team."
The Saints kicked off round one of the tournament with a team score of 344 to place them in seventh place after day one and only two strokes behind the fourth place team St. Francis (Ill.).
Sarah Hartle (Warsaw, Ind.) continued her strong fall campaign on day one with a score of 78 to place her in third place individually.
Mia DelPrince (Fishers, Ind.) contributed with a round one score of 84 and a 17th place individual ranking.
The Saints rounded out day one with scores of 90 from Kylie Day (Zionsville, Ind.), 92 from Emily Duff (Rochester, Ind.) and 100 from Kendra Luckey (Danville, Ind.).
"We were in a good position after day one," continued Holt. "We just needed to come out strong on day two and make a push to move up in the team rankings."
The Saints shot a team score of 347 on day two of the tournament to close out the tournament with a final score of 691 and an eighth place finish.
Sarah Hartle's day two score of 83 gave her a 36-hole total of 161 and a tie for fourth place individually to lead the Saints. This was Hartle's first top-five finish of the year and second consecutive top-ten finish individually.
Emily Duff dropped ten strokes off of her round one score to close out the tournament with an 82 and a 36-hole final score of 174.
Mai DelPrince and Kylie Day both shot round two scores of 91 to close out the tournament. DelPrince finished with a final score of 175 while Day finished at 181.
Kendra Luckey rounded out the Saints with a round two score of 102 and a tournament final score of 202.
"The tournament definitely showed a continuing improvement from our team," continued Holt. "There is still plenty of room to go, but I like the direction we are headed."
The Saints will return to action beginning on Tuesday, September17th for the RMU Invitational at Glen Eagles Golf Club.
