South Bend, IND. -- The Holy Cross Saints men's soccer team will take part in the Michiana Soccer Night, hosted by the Kroc Center and The Salvation Army, with a matchup against nearby Bethel (Ind.) College. The meeting between the Saints and Pilots will be the first regular season matchup against one another.
Tonight's events will kick-off at 5:00 p.m. with IHSAA action as South Bend Washington High School will take on Penn High School. The Saints and Pilots will follow this matchup, with an estimated start time of 7:00 p.m. During halftime of both games, Echo Soccer Club, Junior Irish, the Invaders and the Flames will all take part in mini games against one another.
The meeting between the Saints and Pilots tonight is the final non-conference matchup for the Saints this year. Currently off to a 4-1 start, coach Gallo is looking to close out the non-conference schedule on a positive note.
"After speaking with coach Thiago (Bethel head coach), we decided that since this was the first time both teams would meet in the regular season that we wanted to get the community involved," said head coach Omar Gallo. "At the end of the day we inform our college players that they must be positive role models, and what better way to show an example of that by inviting all the travel youth soccer teams and playing this match at the Kroc Center. The Kroc Center's mission statement is encouraging for the community and it is something special that the city has brought to South Bend. We believe that this mission statement, paired with the mission statements at our respective institutions, all tie in together in what we believe is a great way to attract individuals to our community.
Aside from the great event as a whole, coach Gallo and his team are still focused on the soccer side of things.
"This game has great meaning behind it as it has taken us four years to make it happen," continued Gallo. "I have a great amount of respect for coach Thiago and what he has done for the Bethel program, so I appreciate them giving us this match. This is the biggest non-conference matchup in the history of our program, and with conference beginning next week, we know we have to keep focused and execute. The guys are excited and have worked hard building up to this game."
Several prizes and giveaways will be available throughout the course of the night including, but not limited to, t-shirts, jerseys, Kroc Center day passes and 200 Chic-Fil-A sandwiches.
Admission is set as $4 for adults and $2 for kids. Students of Washington, Penn, Holy Cross and Bethel will get in for free with their student ID.
We hope to see you all tonight for a fun evening of soccer! If you can't make the game, be sure to follow the Saints on twitter: @hocrosaints.
