South Bend, IND. -- The Holy Cross Saints hockey team got back to their winning ways over the weekend with a series sweep over the Spartans of D'Youville (Ny.). Despite needing an empty net goal to put the Spartans away on Friday, the Saints turned in a dominate performance on Saturday en route to a 10-2 victory and series sweep. With the sweep, the Saints improve to 5-1 on the season.

An active first period in Friday night's series opener saw the Spartans take the early 1-0 lead before sophomore B.J. Kolcz (A) (Marysville, Mich.) tied the score at 1-1. Just before the end of the first period, Daniel Vaughan (Littleton, Colo.) netted his first goal of the season to give the Saints a 2-1 lead at the break.

Tyler Joy (Hobart, Ind.) followed things up for the Saints with back-to-back goals, making it four unanswered for the Saints, before the Spartans cut the lead to 4-2.

The second period proved to me more active than the first as the Saints would extend their lead to as large as 7-3. D'Youville, however, would battle back and cut the Saints lead to 7-5 by the end of the period.

With the third period underway, the Spartans were first to strike to make it just a 7-6 Saints advantage. The Saints would need to play great defensive hockey to slow down the final push from D'Youville.

With less than a minute remaining in the game, freshman Nick Wink (Western Springs, Ill.) netted an empty net goal from center ice to push the Saints lead to 8-6 and deliver the final blow to the Spartans. The Saints held off to defeat the Spartans 8-6 and took game one of the series.

Freshman goalie Devin Nyers (Niles, Mich.) stayed perfect on the year after stopping 8-of-14 shots. He now sits at 3-0 on the season.

Senior captain Tommy Lyons (C) (Valparaiso, Ind.) seemed to set up nearly every goal from the Saints at the point and finished with a season-high four assists.

Tyler Joy, B.J. Kolcz (A) and Drew Brodbeck (A) each finished with two goals on the evening.

After a physical game one, the Saints came out strong in Saturday's series finale and really put the pressure on the Spartans from the start.

The Saints scored 10 goals from seven different players in Saturday's 10-2 series sweep over the Spartans. Drew Brodbeck (A), Alex Haygood (South Bend, Ind.) and Tommy Lyons (C) each netted two goals for the Saints. Brodbeck and Haygood each finished the game with five points.

B.J. Kolcz (A), Daniel Vaughan, Sean Root (Livonia, Mich.) and Nick Wink were the other goal scorers for the Saints.

Senior goaltender Brad Hajec (Dearborn, Mich.) picked up his second win of the season after stopping 18-of-20 shots faced. Hajec improved to 2-1 on the season.

The Saints (5-1) will continue their home stand with a series against Robert Morris (White) University beginning on Friday, October 11 at 8:00 p.m. EST. The series will wrap up on Saturday, October 12 at 2:00 p.m. EST.
