Bridgeview, ILL. -- After 90 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Saints went into overtime for the second time this season at Toyota Park against CCAC-foe Roosevelt University. Despite outshooting the Lakers, Mika Reid netted the game-winning goal in the 95th minute to defeat the Saints 1-0. The Saints fall to 3-9 overall and 0-6 in conference play.
The Saints opened up the match on Saturday by putting a lot of offensive pressure on the host Lakers. Mayte Carillo Benavides (Chicago, Ill.) gave the Saints their first great chance of the match after hitting the post on back-to-back shots in the 27th minute.
Despite the missed opportunities early, the Saints kept coming offensively in the half and outshot the Lakers 8-5 through the first half.
Much like in the first half, the Saints continued the offensive pressure in the second half. Mayte Carillo Benavides had another great chance at the net after hitting the crossbar in the 49th minute.
The Lakers picked up the intensity in the second half with seven shots. Senior goalkeeper Aileen Clouse (Beavercreek, Ohio) did a great job of keeping the Saints in the game, despite the unlucky missed opportunities on offense; Clouse stopped all seven shots through the first 90 minutes.
After 90 minutes of action the game was still tied at 0-0 and overtime was on the horizon.
Freshman Karina Cain (Yuma, Ariz.) had the lone shot for the Saints in the period that sailed just wide.
Roosevelt took advantage of their opportunity in the period as Mika Reid took the ball down the left side and beat goalkeeper Aileen Clouse for the golden-goal to give the Lakers a 1-0 conference win over the Saints.
The loss was the seventh consecutive for the Saints as they fall to 3-9 overall and 0-6 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC).
Although they did not score a goal, the Saints outshot the Lakers 17-13. This was the second time this season they've outshot an opponent but did not score.
The Saints will continue their brief road trip in Joliet, Ill. on Wednesday, October 23 against the University of St. Francis. The match is scheduled to kick-off at 8:00 p.m. EST.
