NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Sophomore Troy Padgett (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) netted the go-ahead goal in the 86th minute to propel the Saints to 2-1 come-from-behind victory against the Trolls of Trinity Christian College on Saturday afternoon. With the win the Saints have now set a new program-best with the 10th win of the season, breaking the 9-win milestone the 2012 team set. Holy Cross improved to 10-5 overall and 5-3 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC).
Opportunities came quite often in the first half, but the Saints just could not catch a break offensively. The Saints had 15 shots in the first half, many of which either went just high, wide or were saved by Trolls goalkeeper Gabe Fennema.
Despite the 15 shots and clear domination offensively, the Trolls were first to strike after Mauricio Salgado ripped a shot from just outside the box that deflected off a Saints defender into the net with just 44 seconds left in the half.
Holy Cross outshot the Trolls 15-2 in the half, but found themselves trailing 1-0.
A determined Saints team came out in the second half looking to finish better.
With 35 minutes left to play, the Saints had the positive momentum back on their side.
Opportunities continued to come, but the Saints were unable to find the back of the net until Troy Padgett finished off the pass from Garbhan Grant (Letterkenny, Ireland) in the box to give the Saints their first lead of the game in the 86th minute.
The Trolls were unable to get a shot in the final four minutes as the Saints comeback stood strong and they won their program-best 10th game of the season.
Iain McTurk (Copenhagen, Denmark) finished the game with one save in goal.
Holy Cross (10-5, 5-3 CCAC) will travel to Elgin, Illinois on Wednesday, October 30 for a 4:00 p.m. start against fellow CCAC-foe Judson (11-3-1, 5-2-1 CCAC).
The Saints will return home for one final time during the regular season on Saturday, November 2 for senior day against Purdue Calumet. Prior to the start of the game, seniors Niko Jelicic (Sucuraj, Croatia), Garbhan Grant (Letterkenny, Ireland), TJ Hendzel (Lisle, Ill.) and Farkhod Kurbonov (Dushanbe, Tajikistan) will be honored. Kick-off for senior day is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. EST.
