This Week in Saints Basketball: The Saints return to the hardwood this week with back-to-back road games as they first travel to Southfield, Mich. this evening for a non-conference matchup with Lawrence Tech. Follow the meeting with the Blue Devils, the Saints will close out the week in Goshen, Ind. as they take on the Goshen Maple Leafs on Saturday night.

Recapping Last Week: The Saints opened up the 2013-2014 season last Saturday at home against the No. 20 Lancers of Grace College. A tight first half had the Saints trailing the Lancers by a score of 28-27. The Saints began to find their rhythm in the second half as they built up a three point lead over the Lancers with 5:30 to play. However, foul trouble ultimately hurt the Saints in the second half as the Lancers got to the foul line 25 times in the second half, knocking down 22 of them. Grace defeated the Saints 68-60 to drop the Saints to 0-1 on the young season.
Head Coach Aimee Niespodziany: Entering her third season as head coach of the women's basketball team, Niespodziany has helped guide the Saints to back-to-back 10-win seasons. In her tenure as head coach, Niespodziany holds a career record of 20-44 and has coached two players who have made First Team All-CCAC. Through one game this season, the Saints are 0-1.
Series Notes: Wednesday night's matchup with the Blue Devils will be the second all-time between the two programs. The two last met on Dec. 10, 2012 where the Saints defeated the Blue Devils 72-65 at McKenna Arena. Francesca McCarthy led the way for the Saints with 17 points and nine rebounds while Maggie Gondeck contributed 14 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Saturday's meeting with Goshen (Ind.) will be the fifth all-time between the programs. The two last met on Nov. 2, 2012 at McKenna Arena when Lauren Malinowski scored the game-winning basket to lift the Saints to an 83-82 victory. The all-time series is tied at 2-2.
Scouting Lawrence Tech: The Blue Devils suffered a 78-71 defeat to fellow Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference member Indiana-South Bend to start their 2013-2014 season. Hali Butler led the way for the Blue Devils with a team-high 20 points on 7-of-17 shooting from the floor and eight rebounds. Allison Bicknell pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds and scored 12 points of 5-of-14 shooting for the double-double. Lawrence Tech shot 35.7% from the field and made 17-of-21 (81.0%) attempts at the free-throw line.
Scouting Goshen: The Maple Leafs kicked off their 2013-2014 campaign with a tough road loss to Indiana-Northwest where they were defeated by a score of 71-41. Goshen hit just 17-of-66 (25.8%) of their shots from the floor while turning the ball over 21 times. Tyra Carver led the way for the Maple Leafs with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Freshmen Adjusting Well: Of the current healthy freshmen, both Shelby Nelson and Shana Anderson fared well in their Saints debut against Grace (Ind.) last weekend. Nelson finished the game six points and a game-high nine rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench. Anderson contributed with four points on 1-of-2 shooting while hitting both free-throw attempts and pulling down one rebound in her nine minutes off the bench.
Moving to Divisions: After having just one division last season, the CCAC has moved into two divisions beginning this season ... Robert Morris (Ill.) has returned to the CCAC this season after spending a season as independents ... the Saints, now in the South Division, went 0-7 against future division-foes last season.
A Hoosier State Roster: The 2013-2014 Holy Cross women's basketball team consists of 10 players from the Hoosier State. Of the 10 players, nine different cities are represented.
Holy Cross on the Road: In 62 all-time road games since the 2009-2010 inaugural season, the Saints are 9-53 (.169).
This and That: The Saints return their leading scorer and rebounder from the 2012-2013 season in Lindsey Steffen ... Steffen also holds the career record for points (1,320) and rebounds (817) entering her senior season ... Fran McCarthy enjoyed a breakout junior season where she doubled her scoring and rebounding totals to 9.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game ... Megan Eve enters her senior season in second place all-time in 3-point field goals, trailing only Lauren Malinowski by 31 ... the 2013-2014 roster consists of the largest senior class in Holy Cross women's basketball history with six.
