ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Holy Cross Saints hockey team continued their strong start in the 2013-2014 season over the weekend with a road sweep over the Bulldogs of Adrian College (Black). The Saints scored 16 goals in the weekend series to improve their record to 9-4 on the year and extend their winning-streak to three games.
A fast start in Friday night's series opener had the Saints off to a 3-0 lead. Senior Drew Brodbeck (A) (Stillwater, Minn.) got things rolling with two goals in the first period.
The Bulldogs were able to get on the scoreboard in the second period with three goals, however, the Saints added two goals of their own to take a 5-3 lead into the third period.
Holy Cross and Adrian each added three goals in the final period as the Saints picked up a much needed road win against a fellow ACHA North opponent. The Saints defeated the Bulldogs 8-6 on Friday with the opportunity to pick up their first road sweep of the season on Saturday.
Drew Brodbeck (A) finished with a team-high three goals in the game while Tommy Lyons (C) (Valparaiso, Ind.) led the Saints with a game-high four points (1g, 3a).
Freshman goaltender Devin Nyers (Niles, Mich.) faced 51 shots in Friday's opener while stopping 45.
Just like Friday's opener, the series finale was another intense battle between the two Divisional-foes. The Saints offense got off to another fast start as they developed a 3-2 lead after the first period.
The Bulldogs tied the game up at 3-3 in the second period before Tommy Lyons (C) helped the Saints regain the lead at 4-3 with nine minutes left in the second period.
Lyons extended the lead to 5-3 after netting his second goal of the game after the feed from Drew Brodbeck (A) and B.J. Kolcz (A) (Marysville, Mich.).
Holy Cross was able to extend their lead to 7-4 after a goal from Alex Haygood (South Bend, Ind.) with 13 minutes left in the third period.
In the end, the Saints were able to hold on and finish off the Bulldogs 8-5 for their first road sweep of the season. Devin Nyers finished with 32 saves.
Drew Brodbeck (A), Tommy Lyons (C), Doni Gendel (A) (South Bend, Ind.) and Alex Haygood all scored two goals in the series finale. Brodbeck finished with a game-high six points (2g, 4a).
The Saints (9-4) will return home for five straight game beginning next weekend against Xavier (Ohio) University. Game one will open up on Friday, Nov. 8 at 9:15 p.m. at the Ice Box.
