NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Second year head coach Brian Blondell has announced that Mike Pizzuto (Sarasota, Fla.), Pat Sweeney (Sarasota, Fla.) and Max Linnville (Boone, N.C.) will serve as the team captains for the 2014 season.
Pizzuto appeared in 47 games as a sophomore last season while finishing with .250 batting average, a nine doubles and 24 RBI's.
"Mike was our starting first basemen last season and has really made tremendous strides in our program over the last 14 months," Blondell said. "He comes to work every day looking to improve and is always willing to try something new for the betterment of the team."
Sweeney enters the 2014 season as one of six seniors on the Saints roster. He appeared in 29 games as a junior with one start.
"Whether it's on or off the field, Pat is a good example and representative of Holy Cross," continued Blondell. "He works hard every day and is not afraid to demand and lead by example to his peers. His work ethic has been endless and I expect great leadership from Pat as the players really respond to him."
Linnville enjoyed a breakout season with the Saints in 2013 after transferring in from Western Carolina. He appeared and started in all 51 games during the season and finished with a .287 batting average, a team-high 11 doubles and a team-high 30 RBI's.
"Max was a vital part of our team last season after transferring in from Western Carolina," continued Blondell. "He's a hard worker that never complains and is always looking to go above and beyond. His work ethic and attitude is contagious and I expect a big 2014 season."
Congratulations to the 2014 Holy Cross baseball team captains. The Saints will begin their 2014 season on February 22 against the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.).
