MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Holy Cross Saints hockey program closed out the fall semester on a positive note over the weekend with a series against Central Michigan University. After three periods and an overtime on Friday night, the Saints would have to find a victory in a shootout to knock off the Chippewas. They took control in the series finale on Saturday to complete the sweep and extend their winning streak to seven games as the fall semester concluded and will close out 2013 with a record of 17-7.
A bit of a slow start for the Saints found them trailing for nearly the entire first period on Friday evening before senior Drew Brodbeck (A) (Stillwater, Minn.) tied things at 1-1 with just seconds remaining in the period. It was in the second period when the offense began to pick up. The Saints scored four goals in the second period to take a 5-3 advantage to the third period.
Central Michigan, however, was far from out of the game and tallied two goals in the final period to tie the score at 5-5. After a scoreless overtime session, the Saints headed to their third shootout of the season. Doni Gendel (A) (South Bend, Ind.) and Drew Brodbeck (A) missed their attempts but freshman goaltender Devin Nyers (Mishawaka, Ind.) kept the Chippewas out of the net as well. It was sophomore B.J. Kolcz (A) (Marysville, Mich.) who finished things off once again for the Saints with a backhand that gave the Saints the 6-5 victory over Central Michigan.
Five different players scored goals for the Saints in regulation, led by Alex Haygood (South Bend, Ind.) who finished with a team-high two point performance. Brad Hajec (Dearborn, Mich.) played in goal during regulation and overtime while stopping 25-of-30 shots faced.
Central Michigan was first to strike again in Saturday's series finale taking the 1-0 advantage early in the first period. The Saints responded with back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 lead before the Chippewas would knot the score at 2-2. Following the tying goal from Central Michigan, senior captain Tommy Lyons (C) (Valparaiso, Ind.) sparked the first of three straight goals for the Saints as they opened up a 5-2 advantage. Both teams would add one final goal in the third period as Jake Radde (Granger, Ind.) put the stamp on the game to give the Saints the 6-3 victory and series sweep of the Chippewas.
Drew Brodbeck (A) led the team with two goals while four other players recorded multipoint performances.
With the victory the Saints have won seven consecutive games and have already surpassed their 2012-2013 season win total.
Holy Cross (17-7) will enjoy some time off for the holidays before returning to the ice in 2014 against Aquinas. The series will begin on Friday, January 10 in Grand Rapids, Mich. and conclude on January 11 at Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo, Mich.
