Senior Andrew Tullis battles for position in the post against Olivet Nazarene Tuesday night.
(Notre Dame, IN) The Holy Cross Men's Basketball Team was looking to win it's sixth game out of seven tonight as they took on the visiting Tiger of Olivet Nazarene.

Holy Cross came in as one of the hottest teams in the region.  Coming into tonight they had won their last two games, and were also winners of five out of their last six games.  Olivet Nazarene was going to be a tough challenge as they are consistently at the top of the Division I CCAC standings.  In the end, the Tigers proved to be too much for the Saints tonight beating them 89-74.

The game was closely contested early on as there were six lead changes and neither team led by more than five points in the first ten minutes.  The Tigers were the first to throw a major blow as they used and 11-2 run to open up an eight point lead with just less than eight minutes remaining in the first half.

The Saints fought back as they used a 7-2 run over a span of just two minutes to cut the lead to three points with the score 38-35 with three minutes to play in the game.  That deficit stayed the same heading into the locker room as the Tigers led the Saints by three with the score 41-38 at halftime.

"We were having trouble down low the entire half, and I thought if we could throw some more muscle around down there and grab some rebounds that we might have a chance at winning this game," said Head Coach Bob Schermerhorn.

The Saints shot the ball really well from behind the arc going 6-11 in the first half which is good for 54.5%.  Like Coach Schermerhorn said, however, they were outrebounded 24-14, and that proved to be the difference in the half.  Senior J.T. Breveard (South Bend, IN) and junior Yama Kader (Mission Viejo, CA) led the Saints with 8 first half points.  Junior Michael VanderPloeg (Kalamazoo, MI) had a nice first half as well scoring 5 points and dishing out a team high 6 assists.

The second half looked as if it was going to be as good as the first with the score tied at 50-50 with just over seventeen minutes to play in the game.  The Tigers called a timeout, and it was a good one to take as they went on an 11-2 run over the next two mintues to take a nine point lead with just under fifteen minutes to play.

Holy Cross was able to battle back as they cut the lead to five points midway through the second half.  Unfortunately, that was as close as they got the rest of the night.  Olivet Nazarene went on a 13-5 run over the next four minutes to push their lead to thirteen points with just over six minutes remaining in the game.  The Saints battled hard until the end, but came up short as the visiting Tigers of Olivet Nazarene beat Holy Cross 89-74.

"They just have so much bulk down low that we were having trouble with handling all night.  I also thought number 24 (Antonio Marshall) is a fantastic player for them, and he really gives you trouble on the perimeter when he is able to penetrate into the lane to free up their big men.  I thought our guys played hard all night, but we just came up short in the end," said Coach Schermerhorn.

Breveard led the Saints with 14 points on the night as he went 4 for 6 from behind the three point line.  Kader ended with 11 points, and VanderPloeg netted 7 points and 8 assists to just 2 turnovers for the evening.

The Saints are now 12-14 on the season, and 6-5 in the CCAC.  They take on the CCAC standings leader Cardinal Stritch, this Saturday at 5:00 p.m.

(Notre Dame, IN) The Holy Cross Women's Basketball Team took on the visiting Tigers of Olivet Nazarene who this week were ranked eleventh in the NAIA Division I rankings.

It was a tough game throughout for the Saints as the Tigers brought constant pressure all night.  Holy Cross did a good job of handling it early on in the game, but the up tempo game was just too much for the Saints as they fell to the Tigers of Olivet Nazarene 120-62 tonight.

It was a close game throughout the first half as each team battled for leads throughout the first ten minutes.  Olivet then went on a 10-2 run midway through the half to build a thirteen point.

The Saints battled back as they cut the lead to six points with just over five minutes remaining.  Olivet, however, went on a 9-2 run to bring the lead back up to thirteen points.  A lay-up at the buzzer by junior Lauren Malinowski (Dearborn Heights, MI) pushed the lead back to eleven points with the halftime score at 48-37.

"I thought if we could do a better job with the pressure we might be able to get back into the game.  When we beat the pressure we got some easy buckets, but we were making too many bad decisions throughout the half," said Head Coach Aimee Litka

Junior Jacques Donaldson (South Bend, IN) led the Saints in the first half with eight points.  Sophomore Lindsey Steffen (Nappanee, IN) chipped in six, and also hauled in ten first half rebounds.

The second half was all Tigers as the Saints were outscored 72-25 throughout the entire half.  The Tigers used a 17-0 run early in the second half to push the lead up to 31 points.  That run seemed to deflate the Saints for the rest of the game.  In the end, Holy Cross lost to the visiting Tigers of Olivet Nazarene 120-62.

"There pressue is just really tough to handle.  The platoon people in left and right, and that can be a bit chaotic, but it was definintely a learning experience for the girls heading into our game against Cardinal Stritch," said Coach Litka.

Donaldson followed up her twenty point performance on Saturday by lead the Saints with 19 points  Steffen had a double-double on the night.  She hauled in a school record 21 rebounds while netting 10 points on the evening.

The Saints are now 8-19 on the season, and 3-6 in the CCAC.  Their next game is on the road February 11th against the top team in the conference standings, Cardinal Stritch at 3:00 p.m.

02.06.2012 - [Hockey]
(Notre Dame, IN)  It was another quality weekend for the Holy Cross Men's Hockey Team as they won both games over the weekend against the visiting Musketeers of Xavier University.

Game One

It was a special night for the first game of the set on Friday as senior Steve Stetz (Uniontown, MI) was being honored for his four years of play as a Holy Cross Hockey Player.  The game went well for the host Saints as they honored Stetz, and various hockey alumni were in attendance by beating Xavier 6-3 Friday night.

The Saints got out to a great start as goals by sophomores Tyler Joy (Hobart, IN), Drew Brodbeck (Stillwater, MN), and junior Sean Root (Livonia, MI) helped the Saints build a 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

The Musketeers fought back early in the second period scoring two goals in the second period, and it appeared as if this was going to be a close game with the score 3-2 in favor of the Saints heading in the second intermission.

The Saints responded well in the final period scoring three goals, and only giving up one in the period.  Goals by junior Tyler Schmatz (South Bend, IN), sophomore Sam Soukop (Stillwater, MN), and Root helped push the Saints to the win over Xavier 6-3 Friday night.

Sophomore Brad Hajec (Dearborn, MI) played fantastic on the night saving 46 out of 49 shots on the night.  The Saints were lead by Root who scored 2 goals and dished out 1 assist for 3 points total on the night.  Schmatz and Brodbeck had 2 points on the night each recording a goal and an assist.

Game Two

The second game of the set was a hard fought game for the entire afternoon on Saturday.  The game was tied going into the second period after freshman Austin Pedue (Granger, IN) knotted the game at one a piece with four minutes remaining in the period.

The second period proved to be pretty tough for the host Saints.  After a goal from Root, the Musketeers rattled off three unanswered goals to take 4-2 lead midway through the second period.  The Saints got one of the goals back after sophomore Brendon Gendel (South Bend, IN) put one through the pipes with four minutes remaining in the period.  Xavier, however, pushed the lead back up to 5-3 scoring just a minute later to lead the Saints at the end of the third period.

It was gut check time for the Saints heading into the third period.  They needed to bounce back quickly if they were going to sweep the visiting Musketeers.

The Saints finally responded as Gendel scored to cut the lead to 5-4 with eleven minutes remaining in the game.  Senior Shane Leo (South Bend, IN)  tied the game a minute and a half later, and the Saints had the momentum now to win this game.

It was back and forth the rest of the game, but the Saints' resolve came through in the end.  Gendel put home the game winner on a pass from Pedue with just over a minute remaining to secure the come from behind victory over the visiting Musketeers of Xavier University 6-5 Saturday afternoon.

Freshman Ethan Palmer (Granger, IN) played the first two periods saving 21 of the 26 shots he faced.  Hajec entered into the game at the end of the second period, and saved all 15 shots he faced in the win.

Gendel had a great afternoon finishing with a hat trick and recording an assist for 4 total points on the afternoon.  Pedue finished the game with a total of 3 points scoring a goal and dishing out 2 assists.

With the win the Saints have gone over the .500 mark for the season with a record of 12-11-1.  They play their final game of the season at home at the Ice Box against Thomas Aquinas at 2:00 p.m. on February 11th.

Junior Yama Kader's 22 points on the evening helped Holy Cross beat Purdue North Central 84-74 Saturday night.
(Notre Dame, IN)  The Holy Cross Men's Basketball came into Saturday's game against the Panthers of Purdue North Central winning four out of their last five games.   The Saints continued their red hot play as of late beating the Panthers 84-74 in CCAC action Saturday evening for their second straight conference win of the week.

There is a battle going on in the CCAC standings for the top four spots.  Holy Cross came into the contest at 5-5, and a win against the Panthers would help them in securing one of the top four spots and a home game in the opening round of the CCAC tournament.  The Saints were up to the challenge of maintaining there place in the standings as they beat Purdue North Central 84-74 Saturday night.

Early on, the game looked as if it was going to be battle to the end.  The Panthers came out ready to play by opening up an early 10-6 four minutes into the contest.  The Saints, however, dug deeper after Head Coach Robert Schermerhorn took a timeout after the Panthers took that four point lead early on in the first half.

Coach Schermerhorn must have said all the right things at the timeout, because the Saints went on a 20-2 run over the next five minutes to take a fourteen point lead halfway through the first half.  The Saints pushed the lead to as many as nineteen points, but the Panthers still had some fight left in them at the end of the first half.  Purdue North Central used a 17-1 run of their own to cut the lead to three points entering halftime with the score 41-38 in favor of Holy Cross.

"I told the boys that the rest of these conference games were going to be dogfights.  No one was going to lay down that easy.  I was happy with how we responded midway through the second half, but I didn't like the way we ended it.  We did that all that work to build that lead, but then relaxed a bit to let them back in the game.  I told them that we needed to play a full twenty minutes in the second half if we were going to come out on top today," said Head Coach Bob Schermerhorn.

The Saints shot the ball very well in the first half going 17-33 from the floor, and shot a perfect 3-3 from behind the three point line.  Junior Yama Kader (Mission Viejo, California) went a perfect 2-2 from the three point line leadthe Saints with 13 first half points. Senior Taylor Williams (South Bend, IN) netted 12 first half points as well.

Purdue North Central came out playing well in the second half cutting the lead to one point with fifteen minutes remaining in the game.  It looked as if the game was going to come down to the final buzzer, but Holy Cross went on an 11-0 run in just over two minutes to lead the visiting Panthers 65-50 with just over nine minutes remaining in the game.

That run proved to be the final blow for the Panthers as they never cut the lead to below nine points for the remainder of the game.  In the end, the Saints resolve prevailed as they beat the visiting Panthers of Purdue North Central 84-74 Saturday night.

"I was really proud of the way we closed that game in the final ten minutes.  We are playing with a lot of confidence right now, and it is showing.  I think earlier in the year we would of let a team like that back in it at the end of the game, but right now our boys are really understanding how to win games.  We are playing really well right now, and we just need to keep continuing that going into the final weeks of the regular season," said Coach Schermerhorn.

Kader led five scorers in double figures with 22 points on the night.  Williams finished with 13 points and grabbed 6 rebounds.  Senior J.T. Breveard (South Bend, IN) chipped in 12 points going 3-4 from the floor and 1-1 from behind the arc.  Junior Michael VanderPloeg (Kalamazoo, MI) and freshman Darrell McIntyre (Indianapolis, IN) netted 11 points in the win as well.  VanderPloeg also led the Saints with 6 assists on the night.

The Saints are now 12-13 on the season, and with that win go above .500 on the year in the CCAC with a 6-5 record.  They are tied for third place behind Judson, and just one game behind Calumet St. Joseph for second place (Holy Cross plays at Calumet St. Joseph on February 15th.).  The Saints host Olivet Nazarene a Division I CCAC opponent on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Sophomore Megan Eve's seven points in the first half helped Holy Cross beat Moody Bible 75-45 Saturday afternoon.
(Notre Dame, IN)  The Holy Cross Women's Basketball Team took on the Archers of Moody Bible today in a non-conference game at home.

The Saints started out a bit slow, but  they picked it up midway through the first half, and used another surge midway through the second half to cruise over Moody Bible 75-45 Saturday afternoon.

The Saints opened up to a seven point lead five minutes into the game as they led 13-6 early on in the first half.  The Archers, however, did not led the Saints gain full control as the lead hovered around five to seven points for the next seven minutes.

The Saints, however, amped up the energy on the defensive end late in the first half going on a 12-2 run.  The run propelled an eight point lead to eighteen and the Saints led Archers 39-21 heading into the locker room.

"I was really happy the way we closed out that half.  We have been having trouble all year closing out halves, and it was nice to see us go on a ten point run at the end of the half," said Head Coach Aimee Litka.

Sophomore Lindsey Steffen (Nappanee, IN) led the Saints with 8 first half points, and also grabbed 5 first half rebounds.  Sophomore Megan Eve (Scotsburg, IN) chipped in 7 first half points for Saints respectively.

The eighteen point lead that the Saints enjoyed heading into the second half was just too much for Moody Bible to overcome in the second half.  The Archers cut the lead to fifteen points two minutes into the second half, but that was the closest they ever got.  The Saints went on a 19-7 to push the lead to 28 points midway through the second half with the score 59-31 in favor of Holy Cross.

Holy Cross led by as much as 36 points, but in the end the final margin was a 30 point victory over the visiting Archers of Moody Bible with the final score at 75-45.

It was a balanced attack for the Saints as eleven players scored baskets on the afternoon, and ten players recorded fourteen or more minutes.  The Saints had one of their best outings defensively all year as they forced 34 turnovers, and had 23 steals as a team against the Archers.

"I was happy with the way we played.  I felt everyone contributed, and it was a nice team victory today, and those are always good to have late in the season.  We will need the confidence that we got from this game to hopefully trickle over into our game Tuesday against Olivet Nazarene," said Coach Litka.

Junior Jacques Donaldson (South Bend, IN) scored 15 of her game high 20 points in the second half to lead Holy Cross.  Steffen filled the stat sheet Saturday scoring 14 points, grabbing 9 rebounds, dishing 4 assists, and helped out on the defensive end with 5 steals.  Sophomore Jillian DeLucia (Fishers, IN) had a balanced score sheet scoring 4 points, grabbing 3 rebounds, and dishing out a game high 7 assists.

The Saints are now 8-18 on the year and 3-6 in the CCAC Division II standings.  They play this Tuesday at home as they host Olivet Nazarene at 5:30 p.m. Olivet is a CCAC Division I opponent, and it should be a great a game.

(Notre Dame, IN) The Holy Cross Men's Basketball Team took on the visiting Peregrines of Purdue Calumet Wednesday night in battle of CCAC opponents.

The way the game went for about thirty minutes it appeared as if nothing could go right for the Saints, and everything was going right for the visiting Peregrines.  The Saints were down as many as fourteen points in the second half, but battled back the last ten minutes to win a crucial game in the CCAC standings 90-83.

It was all Purdue Calumet early on as the jumped out to an early 8-2 lead.  Holy Cross looked out of synch, and it appeared that the Peregrines were playing the type of ball early on to win a big game on the road in the CCAC.

Purdue Calumet pushed the lead to as high as eighteen points with just over three minutes remaining in the half.  Holy Cross pushed back a little at the end of half as they were only down fourteen points heading into the halftime with the score 53-39 in favor of Purdue Calumet.

Senior Taylor Williams (South Bend, IN) and freshman Darrell McIntyre (Indianapolis, IN) led the Saints in the first half with 10 points a piece.

The Saints needed to come out of halftime with more energy, but midway through the second half the Peregrines still had a fourteen point lead.  After a timeout by Holy Cross it appeared as if it was gut check time for the team, and they responded with a renewed vigor.

They went on a 21-5 over the next five minutes to take their first lead of the game with the score at 70-68 with just over seven minutes remaining in the game.  Their first lead was enough as Holy Cross never gave it up, and pushed it to as many as seven points with just over two minutes remaining in the game.

Purdue Calumet was not done, however, as they closed the gap to one point with twenty three seconds in the game.  A key lay-up by freshman Zoe Bauer (Culver, IN), and a timely steal on the ensuing inbounds pass by junior Michael VanderPloeg (Kalamazoo, MI) iced the game for the Saints with the final score at 90-83 in favor of Holy Cross.

"Good teams win when they don't play well.  We did not play well for about thirty three minutes of that game, but the guys dug down deep and found a way to win tonight.  This was a great win for us, and I am truly proud of the boys, said Head Coach Bob Schermerhorn.

Junior Yama Kader led the Saints with 20 points. He was instrumental in the late comeback as15 of those points came in the second half.  Williams finished with 17 points, and also led the Saints with 9 rebounds on the evening.  VanderPloeg netted 13 points, and McIntyre chipped in 12 points respectively.  Senior J.T. Breveard (South Bend, IN) had a great all around game scoring 5 points, grabbing 6 rebounds, and dishing out 6 assists for the game.

The Saints are now 11-13 on the year.  They move back to .500 on the year in the CCAC with a 6-6 record.  They play next this Saturday at 3:00 p.m. as they host Purdue University North Central who sits at 4-5 in the CCAC.

Holy Cross gets ready to inbound the ball after a timeout.
(Notre Dame, IN) The Holy Cross Women's Basketball Team took on the visiting Purdue Calumet Peregrines in a CCAC battle Wednesday night.

It went down to the wire, but a three pointer to tie the game by sophomore Megan Eve (Scotsburg, IN) came off the rim as time expired and the visiting Peregrines of Purdue Calumet squeaked out a close one 78-75.

The first half was all Saints as they went up as much as nine points midway through the first half.  The lead would eventually be reduced to five points going into halftime, but Holy Cross definitely felt good going into halftime with the game score at 43-38 in favor of the Saints.

Sophomore Lindsey Steffen (Nappanee, IN) and Junior Lauren Malinowski (Dearborn Heights, MI) led the Saints with 9 first half points.  Eve and Fran McCarthy (Terre Haute, IN) both netted 6 points a piece in helping Holy Cross build that first half lead.

Purdue Calumet still had some fight left in them in the second half.  They battled back after being down as much as 8 points midway through the second half.  The Peregrines went on a 15-2 run to take a five point lead with just over seven minutes remaining in the game.

Holy Cross battled back to tie the game 69-69 with just over six minutes remaining in the game.  The game turned back and forth with neither team being able to grab a hold of a solid lead.  Purdue Calumet, however, was able to secure a three point lead with five seconds to go in the game.  They were at the line with the chance to ice it, but they missed both giving Holy Cross a glimmer of hope.  After a long pass to Megan Eve on the wing she was able to get the shot off in time, but it just rimmed out in the end and the Saints lost 78-75 in closely contested game.

"I thought we played pretty well.  We lost to this team earlier in the season by 27 points, and we outplayed them for the better half of thirty two minutes.   I thought we gave them too many opportunities on second chances, and I think that burned us.  It was a disappointing, because I thought we deserved to win, but we just came up short in the end," said Head Coach Aimee Litka.

Malinowski led the the Saints 18 points while also dishing out 6 assists.  Steffen finished off another double-double scoring 13 points and hauling in 13 rebounds.  Freshman Angela Byrd (Harvey, IL) had a career high netting 13 points on the evening.

Holy Cross falls to 7-18 overall, and 3-6 in the CCAC.  They host the Moody Bible Institute this Saturday, February 4th at 1:00 p.m.

01.30.2012 - [Hockey]
(Evanston, IL)  The Holy Cross Hockey Team ventured on the road this weekend to take on the Wildcats of Northwestern University.

It was a successful weekend in that both games on Saturday and Sunday ended in a victorious fashion against hosts Northwestern University.  In both games, Holy Cross poured it on offensively scoring eights goals in each of two games winning the first game 8-4 and the second game 8-5.

Game 1

In the first game, the Saints scored three unanswered goals at the end of the first period in the span of a minute and forty-seven seconds to open up a 3-0 advantage.  Junior Tyler Schmatz, (South Bend, IN) scored two goals in that span, and Holy Cross was in control throughout the rest of the game.

Northwestern did score early in the second period to make it 3-1, but two unanswered goals in a five minute span by sophomore Brendon Gendel (Stillwater, MN), and sophomore Drew Brodbeck (Stillwater, MN) put the Saints lead comfortably at 5-1. Holy Cross cruised from there winning 8-4 in the first game of the weekend against the Wildcats.

Brodbeck led the Saints with a hat trick on the day, and scored 5 points total as he dished out two assists as well.  Schmatz finished the game with 2 goals and 2 points on the day, and sophomore captain Thomas Lyons (Valparaiso, IN) produced a goal and assist from his defensive spot on the afternoon.

Sophomore goaltender, Brad Hajec, got the win in a strong outing facing 34 shots and letting in 4 goals for a save percentage of .882.

 Game 2

The second game of the weekend proved to be a much tighter game through two periods.  Holy Cross was down 3-2 heading into the third period, and it was evident that Holy Cross needed to amp up the energy in the third period if they were going to get their second of the weekend over the Wildcats.

It seemed Head Coach Bill Schmatz said all the right things in the second intermission as the Saints came out with renewed vigor in the third period.  They scored five goals in a five minute span.  Northwestern was only able to get back one goal during this flurry as Holy Cross came back from their second period deficit to open up 7-4 lead midway through the third period.

Northwestern got another goal to make it a two goal deficit with just under eight minutes remaining in the game.  Saints captain Lyons ended any idea that Northwestern had in coming back late in the game as he scored less than minute later putting the Saints up for good with the final score at 8-5 in favor of Holy Cross.

Gendel and Lyons recorded hat tricks and totaled 5 points after both players dished out two assists as well.  Sophomore Tyler Joy (Hobart, IN) added a goal and an assist, and Schmatz helped lead the attack with two assists on the afternoon.

Freshman Ethan Palmer (Granger, IN) got his second career win relieving Hajec between the pipes making 18 saves while facing 23 shots for a save percentage of .783.

Holy Cross enjoyed an offensive output all weekend out shooting Northwestern 46-34 in the first game, and 36-23 in the second game.  After winning both games, Holy Cross is now one game under .500 with a record of 10-11-1.

They host Xavier University this weekend at the Ice Box on February 3rd, and 4th.  Puck drop is scheduled for 9:15 p.m. on the 3rd and 1:45 p.m. on the 4th.

The game on the 3rd is being labled as the "Seniors and Legends" game.  Senior defenseman Steve Stetz (Uniontown, OH), the lone senior on the roster, will be honored with fellow alumni Eddie Prusinski, Tyler Robbins, Jamie O'Connor, Levi Burkins, and Ritchie Rectenwal in a ceremonial puck drop before the game.  Color guard will be on hand to sing the national anthem, and a pre-game function for the parents will be in the meeting room at the Ice Box.  Fans are encouraged to come on out and cheer on the Saints for this great matchup against Xavier, and also to honor Stetz along with the fellow alumni that helped make Holy Cross Hockey what it is today.

(Elgin, IL) The Holy Cross Men's Basketball Team was looking to win it's fourth game in a row as they visited the Judson University Eagles on Saturday Night.

There was a lot at stake in tonight's match-up against Judson.  Both teams were sitting at 4-4 in the CCAC standings.  A win put Holy Cross at 5-4 in the CCAC, and a strong chance of hosting a home game in the conference tournament.  A loss put the Saints at 4-5 in the standings, and it meant a longer road ahead of them to solidify a home game in the conference tournament that go to the top four teams in the CCAC standings.

Thirty Six minutes into the contest  the Saints held a seven point lead and looked as if they were going to take that third place spot in the standings.  Poor rebounding, and free throw shooting down the stretch, however, allowed the Eagles of Judson to creep back into the game, and ultimately beat Holy Cross 74-69.  With the win, Judson completed the sweep of Holy Cross as they won an earlier match-up at Holy Cross on December 3rd 82-77.

Early on it was all Holy Cross as they used a 15-6 run midway through the first half to lead the Eagles 28-18 with ten minutes remaining.  They pushed the lead to as high as eleven points, but a late 8-1 run by Judson at the end of half closed the gap to three points with the Saints leading 38-35 going into halftime.

"I was really pleased with the way the guys came out in the first half.  We had great energy early on which is always great to see on the road. Although, I wasn't happy with the way we ended the half.  We let them erase a 10 point lead in just two minutes, and you just can't do that against a quality team like Judson," said Head Coach Bob Schermerhorn.

The Saints responded well coming out of the locker room as they pushed the lead back up to seven points where it remained for much of the second half.  Similar to the first half, Holy Cross had trouble closing out the game.  They led by seven points with just over six minutes remaining in the game, but a 20-8 run by the Eagles in the final five minutes pushed Judson to the victory over Holy Cross 74-69.

The glaring statistics that led to the loss for Holy Cross appeared in the free throw shooting and rebounding columns.  Holy Cross left nine potential points on the free throw line shooting a dismal 6-15 from the line which is good for 40 percent from the line.

Holy Cross struggled all day on the boards and in the paint.  They allowed 28 points in the paint, were out rebounded by a margin of 48 to 27, and gave up 12 offensive rebounds which led to Judson scoring 18 second chance points while Holy Cross only scored 5 second chance points.

"We left 9 points on the board at the line, and gave up 12 offensive rebounds.  You can't do that on the road and expect to win.  I thought we played relatively well for the majority of the game until the last 5 minutes.  We just had trouble closing out both halves, and in the CCAC you have to be able to put teams away. Judson is too good to let hang around especially at their place," said Coach Schermerhorn.

Junior Yama Kader (Mission Viejo, CA) led the Saints 23 points.  It is his fourth straight game of scoring at least 19 points, and he is averaging just under 22 points in the past four games.  Senior Andrew Tullis (Orland, IN) netted 10 points on 5 of 6 shooting from the floor.  Junior Michael VanderPloeg (Kalamazoo, MI) had a nice game from his point guard position scoring 9 points and dishing out 7 assists.

Holy Cross is now 10-13 for the season.  They fall back to below .500 in the CCAC with a record of 4-5.  They sit at fourth place in the standings, and they host Purdue Calumet  (3-6 in the CCAC one game behind Holy Cross for fourth place.  Holy Cross won the previous game against Purdue Calumet on December 17th 83-77.)  on February 1st at 7:30 p.m. at McKenna Arena in the Pfeil Center.

(Elgin, IL) The Holy Cross Women's Basketball Team traveled to Elgin, Illinios to take on CCAC opponent Judson University today.

Holy Cross was looking to win it's third game in a row, and The Judson University Eagles were looking for revenge as the Saints beat them in their first meeting at Holy Cross on December 3rd.  Something was going to give, and unfortunately, it was the Saints that gave in as they lost to Judson 69-58 Saturday afternoon.

Holy Cross never seemed to get their rhythm on the road Saturday afternoon. Judson opened the game with a 14-5 run, and never looked back as they controlled much of the first half of action. The Saints never led in the game, and Judson built as much as fourteen point lead in the first half, but ultimately led at half by nine points 40-31.

Judson had it's way down low outscoring Holy Cross 20-4 in the paint in the first half. They also got a big lift off the bench.  Judson's bench scored 20 points to Holy Cross' 12 points in the first half as well.

"We were just flat all afternoon.  It was a tough afternoon for us.  I have to give credit to Judson, because they played well but I was a little disappointed in the way we played today and especially in the first half," said Head Coach Aimee Litka.

The second half was much closer as the Saints used a 6-0 run with seven minutes remaining in the game to cut the lead to four points.  Unfortunately, that was the closest Holy Cross got in the second half.  A Judson three pointer pushed the lead back up to seven points, and Judson went on to beat Holy Cross 69-58.

"I was really happy with the way Jacques and Mary played today.  It was tough with Lo (Lauren Malinowski) and Lindsey being banged up a little, but I thought we just had trouble sustaining any offensive rhythm.  We played better down-low in the second half, but the hole we dug in the first half was just too much to overcome down the stretch. We have to bounce back quickly, because we have a tough challenge in our next game against Purdue Calumet on Wednesday," said Coach Litka.

Junior Jacques Donaldson (South Bend, IN) took advantage of being inserted into the starting line-up for sophomore Lindsey Steffen (Nappanee, IN) leading Holy Cross with 16 points. Steffen is battling back from a shoulder injury she suffered in the Saints victory against Trinity Christian on Wednesday.  She was still able to contribute in a limited fashion scoring 6 points and grabbing 8 rebounds in 23 minutes of action.

Sophomore Mary Fitzgerald (Livonia, MI) continued her strong play as of late as she netted 14 points in the loss.  It is Fitzgerald's second straight game scoring in double figures, and she is averaging 11.7 points over the past three games for Holy Cross.  Sophomore Fran McCarthy (Terre Haute, IN) had a nice showing off the bench chipping in 8 points as well.

Holy Cross is now 7-17 on the season, and 3-5 in the CCAC which is good for fifth place in the standings.  They are a half game behind Judson and Trinity International who are 3-4 in the CCAC for fourth place.  Judson is in third place officially, as they own the tie-breaker against Trinity International.

Holy Cross hosts Purdue Calumet on February 1st at McKenna Arena in the Pfeil Center at 5:30 p.m.  Holy Cross is looking to avenge an earlier defeat at Purdue Calumet on December 17th.  In that game Holy Cross lost 87-60.

(Notre Dame, IN)  The Holy Cross Men's Basketball Team took on the visiting Trolls of Trinity Christian in CCAC Division II basketball action.

The Saints were looking to win their game third in a row, and move up to second in the CCAC Standings Wednesday night.  Holy Cross took care of business, and moved into second place beating Trinity Christian 63-61.

The Saints opened up the game in the first five minutes leading the Trolls 17-9.  Holy Cross did a nice job of mixing good defense and turning that defense into points throughout the first half.  The Saints used a 9-4 run at the end of the half to lead the Trolls 34-21 heading into the locker room.

Junior Yama Kader (Mission Viejo, CA) led all scorers in the first half with 11 points as he went 2-3 from behind the three point line.  Freshman Zoe Bauer (Culver, IN) provided a much needed spark off the bench by going 2-2 from behind the three point line and scoring 6 points.

"I thought we played really well in the first half. We needed to do a better job on the defensive rebounding, but we were forcing a lot of turnovers that I think led to our thirteen point lead at half.  If we could continue that energy I thought we definitely win the game," said Head Coach Bob Schermerhorn.

The second half proved to be a little more to handle for the Saints than the first.  The Saints kept their lead to about 10 points for most the half until the final five minutes.  The Saints led 60-50, but they only scored three more points for the remainder of the game.  Holy Cross fought off an 11-3 run in the final five minutes to beat the visiting Trolls of Trinity Christian 63-61.

Kader led all scorers with 19 points.  Senior J.T. Breveard (South Bend, IN) added 9 points and 5 assists, and senior Adam Dobrzykowski (South Bend, IN) added 8 points and hauled in 5 rebounds for the Saints.

"It was a good win for us.  I thought we played well up until the last five minutes, but the guys held on strong and I was proud of them for that," said Coach Schermerhorn.

Holy Cross has now won three games in a row.  They improve their overall record to 10-12.  The ten wins is the first time in Holy Cross Men's Basketball that they have ever won double digit games in a season.  They are 4-4 in the CCAC, and sit at second place in the standings.  The Saints play Judson on Saturday at Judson and tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

(Notre Dame, IN)  The Holy Cross Women's Basketball Team hosted the visiting Trolls of Trinity Christian tonight in CCAC Division II basketball action.

This was a much anticpated game as Holy Cross needed a win to move up to fourth in the standings, and Trinity Christian could gain some breathing room in the top four of the standings with a win on the road.  In the end, the Saints defended their home court as they controlled most of the game beating Trinity Christian 78-66.

The Trolls opened up to an early 3-0 lead, but that was all they could muster in the afternoon as the Saints poured it on for the remaining of the half.  Trinity Christian only scored 18 more points as the Saints tightened up on the defensive end, and got into an early rhythm offensively.  The Saints used the strong play to open up a 41-21 lead at the half.

"I thought it was one of the best halves we played all year.  We started a bit slow, but once we got going it was truly a joy to see the girls play that well," said Head Coach Aimee Litka.

Junior Lauren Malinowski (Dearborn Heights, MI) led the Saints with 14 first half points.  Sophomore Lindsey Steffen (Nappanee, IN) added 10 points and grabbed 6 rebounds.

The second half was more of the same for the Saints as they played strong early on to build a lead as high 24 points.  The Trolls battled back, but the lead was just too much to handle for the vistors as Holy Cross won their second game in a row beating Trinity Christian 78-66.

"It was a much needed win for us.  We are now sitting in 4th place, and we would host a tournament game if the season ended now.  Unfortunately, the season doesn't end now, and we need to keep this momentum going into our game against Judson on Saturday," said Coach Litka.

Malinowski led all scorers with 19 points.  Sophomore Mary Fitzgerald (Livonia, MI) had a great game off the bench scoring 16 points for the Saints.  Steffen continued her great play scoring 16 points and grabbing 7 rebounds.  Freshman Maggie Gondeck (Michigan City, IN) who was inserted into the starting lineup had a fantastic game scoring 9 points, and hauling in a team high 9 rebounds for Holy Cross.

The Saints have now won two games in a row improving their record to 7-16 overall and 3-4 in the CCAC which is good for fourth in the standings.  They play Judson who sits at 2-4 in the CCAC at Judson this Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

(Notre Dame, IN)  The Holy Cross Hockey Team took on the visiting Flyers of Lewis University on Saturday.

The first game was cancelled because of weather related conditions so the Saints took full advantage of their only game over the weekend routing the visiting Flyers of Lewis University 12-4.

The Flyers scored the first goal of the game a minute and thirteen seconds into the first period, but that was the only consolation of the evening for Lewis. Holy Cross scored 16 seconds later, and then scored 3 more unanswered goals giving them a 4-1 advantage midway through the first period.  Lewis added another goal late in the period, but the Saints till held a 4-2 advantage heading into the first intermission.

Junior Tyler Schmatz (South Bend, IN) scored two goals off of assists from sophomore Brendon Gendel (South Bend, IN) to lead the Saints in the first period.  Sophomores Drew Brodbeck (Stillwater, MN) and Tyler Joy (Hobart, IN) scored the other two Saints' goals that were assisted by junior Sean Root (Livonia, MI).

The Flyers came out with a renewed vigor in the second period.  Root scored the first goal of period off and assist from Brodbeck widening the margin to 5-2.  Lewis, however, scored two straight goals midway through the period making it a one goal game at 5-4.  Sophomore Sam Soukup (Stillwater, MN) scored late in the period to give the Saints a 6-4 advantage heading into the third period.

It was all Saints in the third period.  Holy Cross scored seven unanswered goals and six of them were in the third period.  Gendel led the scoring in the third period with two goals off of assists from Brodbeck.  Root got his second goal of the game off of an assist from Joy, and freshman Ryan Gallup (Fishers, IN) scored his only goal of the game off of an assist from sophomore captain Thomas Lyons (Valparaiso, IN).  Schmatz finished off the scoring in the third and completed his hat trick with an assist from Lyons.

Root led the Saints with 5 points scoring 2 goals and recording 3 assists.  Three Saints players recorderd 4 points on the day.  Schmatz scored a hat trick while dishing out one helper, Gendel had 2 goals and 2 assists, and Brodbeck scored a goal and recorded 3 assists of his own.  Lyons also had 3 assists from his defensive spot in the win.  Sophomore Brad Hajec (Dearborn, MI) got his seventh win of the season getting 23 saves off of 27 shots faced on the day.

The Saints are now 8-11-1 on the year.  Their next games are on the road this weekend against Northwestern. They play the 28th and the 29th and both games are scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.

Freshman Darrell McIntyre showed great energy off the bench today scoring 9 points in the win over IUSB.
(South Bend, IN)  For the second time this season the Holy Cross Men's Basketball Team beat crosstown rival IUSB Saturday afternoon.

The Saints were down as many as fifteen points in the second half, but a three pointer by junior Yama Kader (Mission Viejo, CA) with 5 seconds remaining in the game capped off an amazing comeback on the road as Holy Cross beat the Titans of IUSB 71-69.

The Saints, playing without star forward Taylor Williams (South Bend, IN), did not show any signs of slowing down as they opened up an early 14-9 lead on the Titans five minutes into the contest.  After a lay-up by freshman Zoe Bauer (Culver, IN) the Saints pushed the lead to seven points midway through the first half.

The Titans, however, settled down and started to find a rhythm offensively.  They went on a 16-6 run over the next five minutes to take a 3 points leading the Saints 25-22 with six minutes remaining.  The Titans pushed the lead to eight points heading into the halftime with the score 38-30.

Kader led the Saints with 9 points going 3 for 6 from behind the three point line.  Senior Andrew Tullis (Orland, IN) took advantage of his insertion into the starting lineup for Williams by going 3 for 3 in the half and scoring 6 points.  Senior Adam Dobrzykowski provided great energy in the half scoring 6 points and grabbing 6 rebounds as well.

"I told the boys that we were going to have to fight.  That it was time to take a stand.  Games like this don't come easy, and IUSB was looking to get back at us for the loss we gave them earlier in the year.  I told them that we have to believe we can win this game, and if we believe that then everything will take care of itself," said Head Coach Bob Schermerhorn.

Throughout the second half it looked as if the motivation from the Titans for wanting to avenge the loss in November to Holy Cross was too much for the Saints to overcome.  IUSB led by as many as 15 points in midway through the second half.

This is when the Saints decided to push back.  Coach Schermerhorn decided to switch to a 1-3-1 zone, and it proved to be the difference in the game.  The Saints went on 15-2 run over the next five minutes cutting the lead to two points as the Titans led 61-59 with 4:51 left in the game.

The next five minutes was back and forth, and it seemed as if the last team to make a basket was going to win the game.  Luckily, it was the Saints who scored the last basket.  Kader, who scored only 2 points in the first contest against IUSB hit a three pointer with 5 seconds remaining in the game.  After a couple of timeouts, the Saints defense held strong, and Holy Cross beat the host Titans of IUSB 71-69.

"It was just a gutsy performance by our guys.  We played that zone for over 12 minutes which is so hard to do, but our guys just grinded and battled all game.  You could tell our kids really wanted this game by how excited they were in the locker room aftewards.  Beating IUSB once this season was great, but sweeping them was even better.  This was an amazing day for Holy Cross Basketball, and our athletics in general," said Coach Schermerhorn.

Even though Holy Cross was on the road the crowd of the Saints was absolutely amazing.  The chants of defense down the stretch made it seem like a home game more than a road game.  It all culminated with the charging of the court as the buzzer sounded by the loyal student section that came over from Holy Cross for the afternoon game.

Kader finished with a game high 21 points and grabbed 6 rebounds as well.  Senior J.T. Breveard (South Bend, IN) had his second solid game in a row by scoring 12 points.  Junior Michael VanderPloeg (Kalamazoo, MI) netted 9 points, and freshman Darrell McIntyre (Indianapolis, IN) showed his great energy off the bench as of late netting 9 points as well.

The Saints are now 9-12 overall.  With that win they completed the sweep of IUSB, and they have won their second game in a row.  Holy Cross is back in action at home January 25th against fellow CCAC opponent Trinity Christian.  Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

(South Bend, IN)  The Holy Cross Women's Basketball Team visited the IUSB Titans today in the hopes of breaking a three game losing streak.

The Saints were looking to avenge an overtime loss to the Titans on November 1st.  In that game Holy Cross lost by a point, and today was a good day to avenge that heartbreaking loss.  This game did not disappoint for the second time in a row, but this time the Saints got on the winning end beating the host Titans of IUSB 67-61 in overtime.

Holy Cross showed they were ready to go from the onset scoring the first four points and gaining and early 4-0 advantage.  The Titans battled back, however, as neither team could gain a lead larger than three points for the first ten minutes of action.

The Saints were the first to deliver a major blow as they went up 9 points after going on a 11-1 run at the end of the half to lead the Titans 37-28 heading into the break.

"I thought we ended the half really well. We have had trouble the past three games finishing off halves, and I thought the girls did a great of doing that in the first half," said Head Coach Aimee Litka

Sophomore Lindsey Steffen (Nappanee, IN) continued her solid play as of late finishing the first half with 10 points and hauling in 5 rebounds.  Sophomore Kristin Nitka (Chicago, IL) provided a great spark off the bench scoring 8 points and going 2-3 from beind the three point line.

The second half opened up very well for the visiting Saints as they pushed their lead to as much as 13 points in the first 3 minutes of play.  The Titans did not go down that easily as they went on an 11-0 run in the next five minutes to cut their deficit to only a point with thirteen minutes remaining.

The game was up in the air for the rest of the contest.  IUSB went up as much as six points, but were up two points with under a minute remaining.  Sophomore Francesca McCarthy (Terre Haute, IN) scored a lay-up with 49 seconds left in the game tying the game at 56-56.  Neither team could gain the advantage for the next 49 seconds as the game stayed tied at 56-56. Lke the first game on Novemeber 1st  it had to take overtime to determine a winner.

This time, however, it was all Saints in the overtime.  They scored the first six points going up 62-56 in the first three minutes.  The Saints never looked back from there as they snapped their three game losing streak beating crosstown rivals IUSB 67-61.

"I was really proud of our girls today.  We have really showed how much we have improved since November.  IUSB is a very good team, and the fact we beat them at their place showed how hard the girls have worked over the past couple of months.  We have had trouble closing games out, and today the girls did a nice job of finishing the game in overtime.  I am just really proud of them," said Coach Litka.

It was a different game as Coach Litka stated.  In the first game the Saints were outrebounded by IUSB 48-23.  In this game, Holy Cross outrebounded the Titans 45-42.  The Saints did a much better job of taking care of the ball in the second game as well.  They had 31 turnovers in the game at Holy Cross in November, but just committed 16 turnovers in this game.

"I had our SID show us stats for turnovers, points off turnovers, offensive rebounds, and second chance points.  It really showed that when we did a better job of making teams go one and done, and not turn the ball over that those were the games we won.  That is all we worked on in practice yesterday, and it was nice to see the girls apply that in the game today," said Coach Litka.

Steffen led all scorers with eighteen points.  She also recorded her fourth double-double in a row, and eleventh overall by grabbing a game high 14 rebounds.  Nitka finished with 11 points, and junior Lauren Malinowski netted 10 points and grabbed 7 rebounds respectively.

The Saints are now 6-16 overall.  The six wins is a school record.  They are back in action as they take on fellow CCAC opponent at home on January 25th.  Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

(Notre Dame, IN) The Holy Cross Men's Basketball Team took on the visiting Lakers of Roosevelt University tonight at McKenna Arena in the Pfeil Center.

Roosevelt which is a new school in the CCAC Division I came into the game 7-9, and Holy Cross was looking to bounce back from a loss at the University of Saint Francis on Tuesday.  It ended up being a better night for the host Saints as Holy Cross beat the visiting Lakers 85-76 for their eighth win on the season.

The Saints had a great dynamic duo going in the first half.  Holy Cross rode the hot hand of Junior Yama Kader  (Mission Viejo, CA) early and often in the first part of the first half.  Kader scored 13 of the first 17 points scored by the Saints, and it propelled them to a one point lead midway through the half.  Freshman Darrell McIntyre (Indianapolis, IN) continued his strong play as of late.  He followed up a career high of 13 points against Saint Francis on Tuesday by going 6 for 7 from the field for 12 points in the first.

A buzzer beating jumper by freshman Zoe Bauer, and the fantastic play of Kader and McIntyre capped off an 18 to 10 run at the end of the half for the Saints that gave them a ten point lead heading to halftime with the score 44-34.

Kader finished the half with 16 points going 6 for 8 from the field and a perfect 4 for 4 from the three point line.  McIntyre finished going 6 for 7 from the field for 12 points in 11 minutes of action off the bench.  The Saints were very hot from the field in the first half hitting 60 percent of their shots.  It went even better from the three point line as the Saints went 5 for 6 which is good for 83 percent.

"We shot the ball really well in the first half. I thought we have shot the ball well in the last two games and it continued into this game as well.  I thought we needed to clean-up the defensive rebounding because we gave up 7 offensive rebounds.  I told them we need to get stronger on the boards, because a good way to give up a ten point lead is to let a team get a lot of second chances," said Coach Schermerhorn.

The Saints came out playing well in the second half widening their lead to 15 points five minutes into the second half.  The Lakers were not going to back down that quickly.  Roosevelt cut the lead to six points with five minutes remaining in the game, and it looked as if the game was going to come down to the wire.

In the end the Saints poise won out as junior Michael VanderPloeg (Kalamazoo, MI) went 8 for 8 from the line down the stretch to put the Saints up for good as they won 85-76 for their eighth win of the season.

Kader had the hot hand all night going 8 for 13 from the field, and 4 for 6 from the three point line for the game.  He led all scorers with 24 points.  Senior J.T. Breveard (South Bend, IN) scored 13 of his 17 points in the game in the second half, and it was strong showing off the bench for McIntyre and VanderPloeg.  McIntyre finished the game going 9 for 11 from the field scoring a career high 18 points, and VanderPloeg scored twelve points going 9 for 10 from the free throw line, and going 8 for 8 down the stretch to ice the win for the Saints.

Holy Cross is now 8-12 on the season, and 3-4 in the CCAC.  This season is starting to be the season of building records.  So far, the Saints have already beat the school record of 4 wins in a season, and they are looking to add their ninth win on Saturday as they visit to play against crosstown rival IUSB at 2:00 p.m.  The game is being followed by the women who play at noon.  The game will be shown on video on the internet.

(Notre Dame, IN) The Holy Cross Women's Basketball Team took on CCAC Division I newcomer Roosevelt University tonight at McKenna Arena in the Pfeil Center.

It was a one point game at half, and it looked as if it was going down to the wire, but the Lakers of Roosevelt University  pulled away late and beat the Saints 78-63 in McKenna Arena at the Pfeil Center tonight.

The game opened up well for Holy Cross as sophomore guard Kristin Nitka (Chicago, IL)  took advantage of her first start of the year hitting back to back three pointers to give Holy Cross an early 6-0 advantage.

The Saints held that six point lead, and even went up as much as eight points over the next ten minutes of action.  The visiting Lakers, however, found there rhythm on the offensive end late in the first half.  Roosevelt capped a 10-4 run at the end of the half with a buzzer beating lay-up to lead by one entering the break at 32-31.

Nitka and sophomore Francesca McCarthy (Terre Haute, IN) led the Saints with six points a piece.  Sophomore Lindsey Steffen (Nappanee, IN) hauled down 7 first half rebounds, and sophomore Jillian DeLucia (Fishers, IN) led the Saints with 8 rebounds.

"I thought we had to do a better job of not turning the ball over, and giving them second chances.  We had 11 first half turnovers, and gave up 9 offensive rebounds.  That is too many second half opportunities for them.  We were down only one point, but they took ten more shots than we did.  If we could clean up that part of the game I felt we had a great chance of winning heading into the second half," said Head Coach Aimee Litka.

The second half started off the same way the first half ended as it was back and forth as no team could gain an upper hand on the other.  Holy Cross held a six point advantage with just over ten minutes remaining, but after Roosevelt took a timeout they came out with a new vigor that the Saints had trouble matching for the rest of the game.

The Lakers went on a 22-8 run in the span of four minutes to take a 62-54 lead with five minutes remaining in the contest.  The Saints could not get anything going offensively as the Lakers picked up the energy on the defensive end.  Holy Cross cut the lead to five points, but the Lakers bounced back to push the lead to 11 points with two minutes remaining.

After fouling and some free throws the Lakers pushed the lead to 15 points, and it's final score as Holy Cross lost  78-63.

Steffen recorded her eleventh double-double of the year as her and Nitka led the Saints with 11 points, and Steffen hauled in 11 rebounds rounding out her double-double.  McCarthy chipped in ten points respectively, and DeLucia had a career high eleven rebounds on the night as well.

"I felt the score didn't indicate how close this game was for much of it.  I have to give credit to Roosevelt they really amped up the energy defensively as the game went on and we had trouble matching it at the end.  We just have to find a way to dig a little deeper late in games so we can close them out better," said Coach Litka.

The Saints fall to 5-16 on the year and are 2-4 in the CCAC.  They play crosstown rival IUSB at IUSB at noon on Saturday.  It is double header with the men who play at 2:00 p.m.  Both games will have a live video feed on the internet if you cannot make it.

(Joliet, Illinois) The Holy Cross men's basketball team was in action Tuesday night against the Fighting Saints of the University of St. Francis. USF came into the contest (9-7) after a close loss to Olivet Nazarene last week.

Holy Cross entered the game with a record of (7-11) but were (5-3) in their last 8 games.

The Fighting Saints took control of the game first, scoring early and often to take the lead against the Saints. USF looked as if it was going to take a large lead, but Holy Cross made a game of it early, as Michael VanderPloeg (Kalamazoo, Michigan) made a lay-up to make the game a two-point contest, 26-24, at the 6:55 mark of the first half.

The Saints were playing catch-up for most of the first half, however, as USF took a 9-point lead into halftime, and continued to build its lead during the second period. VanderPloeg again would make two free-throws to bring Holy Cross within 13 points late in the second half, but that was as close as Holy Cross came all night, falling 90-65.

Coach Schermerhorn stated after the game that it was not poor shooting that doomed his men, "I felt like we shot okay, but we got outmuscled a bit by their guys. We need to play tougher and more physical if we expect to win these games."

Holy Cross shot 46% from the field in the game, including 50% in the first half, but they did not have enough shot attempts, which ultimately lead to the loss. Holy Cross made 46% of their 56 shots, while USF made 46% of their 67 attempts.

The Saints had 4 players in double figures in the game, as VanderPleog finished with 12, senior J.T. Breveard (South Bend, Indiana) scored 10, Yama Kader (Mission Viejo, California) added 12, and freshman Darrel McIntyre (Indianapolis, Indiana) lead the Saints with 13.

The loss puts the Saints at (7-12) on the year, and they host Roosevelt University this Thursday at 7:30 p.m.  The game is directly after the women's game which starts at 5:30 p.m.

(Joliet, Illinois) The women's basketball team traveled to Joliet, Illinois Tuesday night to take on the Fighting Saints of the University of St. Francis. USF came into play with a record of 12-8 after a 25-point loss to Olivet Nazarene January 14th.

The Saints (5-14), were coming off a nail-biting 87-85 loss to Trinity International University last Saturday, and began the game on a high note by scoring the first three baskets of the game.

The Saints were up 6-0 just two minutes into the game, and enjoyed the lead for the entire first half, occasionally running the advantage up to 12 points. The Fighting Saints never lead during the first half, but were never out, cutting the Holy Cross lead to just 4 points before halftime. The Saints took a lead into the half 35-31 behind 8 points from both sophomore Lindsey Steffen (Nappanee, Indiana) and junior Mary Fitzgerald (Livonia, Michigan).

The second half was again dominated by the Saints early, as Holy Cross lead by as many as 8 in the early going. USF, behind its home crowd, mustered enough energy for a comeback, and rode their momentum to tie the game a 49 apiece at the 13:00 minute mark of the second half.

A second free-throw by USF's top player, Katie Gonnering, made the score 50-49, and the Fighting Saints took the lead for the first time in the game. Holy Cross responded and tied the game again at 55, only to see USF go on a run of its own and extended their lead to 8 points with two minutes remaining in the game.

Lindsey Steffen got the Saints close after completing a three-point play with about 90 seconds remaining that cut the lead to 4 points, 69-65, but USF finished strong and stole the game 72-65.

Lindsey Steffen recorded her tenth double-double of the season and lead all scorers with 26 points and 13 rebounds, out-duelling USF's Gronnering who posted 25 points and 12 rebounds. Francesca McCarthy (Terre Haute, Indiana) scored 10 points and grabbed 7 boards.

The loss drops Holy Cross to a record of (5-15), and their next game is at home this Thursday against Roosevelt University at 5:30 p.m.
