"I can't put into words how proud I am of the boys this year.  This truly was a fantastic year for the boys.  After only winning four games the previous year, and to win fourteen and a tournament game speaks volumes to the amount of work they put in to get the results they did this season," said Head Coach Bob Schermerhorn.

"I am very proud of the way our team performed all year.  It was a tough transition for them at the beginning, but once they got things under way they really worked hard to get to where they got throughout the season.  We are very excited about next season as we do not lose a single player, and we are excited about the players we are bringing in next year,"  said Head Coach Aimee Litka.

The Men's Golf Team was the first ever team from Holy Cross Athletics to win a CCAC Title last night!
(Hammond, IN)  The Holy Cross Men's Golf Team participated in the CCAC Golf Championships this week.  The winner would have the right to an automatic bid in the NAIA National Tournament in Salem, Oregon on May 22nd-25th.

After the second round the golf team was celebrating as it took home the CCAC Title winning by a whopping twenty three strokes well ahead of the runner-up, St. Francis.  This is the first title for the men's golf team, and the first CCAC Title for any sport at Holy Cross.  They will also be the first team at Holy Cross to compete in the NAIA National Championships.

Junior Mike Prior (Schoolcraft, MI) earned first place medalist honors shooting a total score of 147 for the tournament.  With the win, Prior also earns First Team All CCAC, and Golfer of the Year in the CCAC.  This is the first time a player in any sport has won player of year for a sport at Holy Cross.

04.24.2012 - [Club Lacrosse]
(Notre Dame, Ind.) The Holy Cross Men's Lacrosse team captured their third straight division championship and fourth straight automatic bid to the Great Lakes Lacrosse League National Championships with a pair of victories over the weekend.

In dominating fashion, the Saints rolled past the Spartans of Michigan State with a 13 - 3 victory securing their third straight division title and first in the newly formed East Division. Holy Cross previously competed in the South Division winning it in 2010 and 2011.
"I thought we did an excellent job of executing our game plan against Michigan State," said Head Coach Michael Hodge. "We controlled the tempo of the game and played an all around good game."
Game two proved to be more challenging for the Saints against the University of Michigan. Holy Cross jumped out to a quick two goal lead, but the Wolverines battled back and tied the game at 2 before the end of the first quarter.
After trading goals in the second quarter the game was knotted up at 4. Michigan took an early 5 - 4 lead in the third, but the Saints battled back and secured their eighth victory of the season 10 - 8.
This was the second time in a week the Saints beat the Wolverines. Holy Cross won 9 - 3 last weekend in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
"In game two we struggled to keep the ball out of our defensive end," said Coach Hodge. "However, we were able to get a goal when we needed it most and closed out the game."
The weekend sweep marked the second time in program history that Holy Cross finished the regular season with a perfect record. The last time was in 2010 when they won the GLLL National Championship.
The 2012 season marks the first time in program history that Holy Cross started and finished the year ranked 1st in the Great Lakes Lacrosse League polls. The official poll is kept through laxpower.com and rated on the team's power ranking. The Saints finished with a 76.90 power ranking. For a complete explanation on the formula used click HERE.
Holy Cross will open the weekend against MCLC (Milwaukee), on Saturday, April 28th, at 11:15am. This year's tournament is being held by the University of Wisconsin Madison. The eight team National Championship tournament includes; Holy Cross College, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, University of Michigan, Mad Cow Lacrosse Club, Northern Illinois University, University of Wisconsin Eau Claire, University of North Dakota, and the University of Wisconsin.
If the Saints win their quarterfinal match-up, they will either play the University of Michigan for the third time this year or the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse. Holy Cross is 3 - 1 all time against the Wolverines.
Last year, UW La Crosse knocked Holy Cross out of the tournament in the quarterfinals, 11 - 9. In their only other match-up the Saints beat the Eagles in 2009 during the quarterfinals of the National Championships 8 - 3.

(Notre Dame, IN)  The Holy Cross Baseball Team took on the Trolls of Trinity Christian in a CCAC series that saw the Saints play one game at home, and the other two at Trinity Christian.

The first game was was one that the Saints needed to forget as soon as it ended as they lost 27-2 at Kennedy Park.  It was one of those games where nothing seemed to go right for the Saints, and the bats of the Trolls seemed to hit the ball consistently where the Holy Cross defense was not.

In the double header the following day the Saints did much to improve from the previous day's outcome.  They lost the first game 6-4 after tying it up at 3-3 in the top of the fourth inning.  The Trolls responded, however, by scoring three runs in the bottom half of the inning to make it 6-3.  The Saints scored one more run, but ended up falling short in the comeback attempt.

In the second game of the double header the Saints were down 5-0 heading in the final inning.  They were able to put two runs in their final inning behind the plate, but that was all they were able to muster as they lost 5-2.

In the second game, the Saints were down 5-1 heading in the bottom half of the seventh inning.  A three run homer by sophomore Jackson Hallahan (Silver Lake, MN) cut the lead to 5-4 with no outs in the inning.  The Lakers, however, were able to get the next three batters out, and hold on for a 5-4 decision in their favor in the night cap at Kennedy Park.

In the second game the Saints had trouble getting on base as they were only able to get four hits in the second game.  The St. Francis pitching stymied Holy Cross all game to a 7-2 victory.

Game One

The Saints battled hard from behind the plate, but just could not keep Saint Francis from crossing the plate consistently.  Saint Francis scored a run in every inning but the third, and that gave them the momentum to a 10-3 victory over Holy Cross.

(French Lick, IN) The Holy Cross Men's Golf Team took the links over the past couple of days down in southern Indiana at the Thrill at the Hill Invitational at Donald Ross Golf Course.

The men shot an opening round 323 at the very challenging Donald Ross Course that put them in fifth, and twenty strokes off the leader and eventual winner Ilinois Wesleyan.  Sophomore Matthew Code (Ontario, Canada) and junior Mike Prior (Schoolcraft, MI) paced the Saints with opening round 80s which was good for ten over par, but helped the Saints remain in contention for a top five finish in the field of fifteen.

The second round proved to be much more friendly as the Saints shot fourteen shots better to finish with a second round team score of 309.  The Saints were unable to move up from the fifth position, but were able to hold onto that fifth spot giving them a top five finish in a very tough field.

"I thought we bounced back from day one.  It was a tough first day for everyone, but Wesleyan was just able to navigate the course better which allowed them to get a big opening day lead.  I was proud of the way the guys fought back in the second round to hold onto the fifth spot.  We just have to do a better job of coming out on the first day, and posting a better score," said Head Coach Tim Holt.

The Men's Golf Team has finished in the top five of their past two tournaments. They play this weekend on March 30th and March 31st at Indiana Wesleyan at Meshingomesia Country Club in Marion, Indiana.

(DeKalb, Ill.) The Holy Cross Men's Lacrosse team has earned a #1 ranking in the latest Great Lakes Lacrosse League (GLLL) polls after two convincing victories over Northern Illinois University and Loyola University last Saturday.

This is the first time the Saints have returned to the top of the polls since the 2010 season after they finished with a perfect 15-0 record and winning their first championship.
"It's nice to be ranked first early in the season, but we still have a lot to accomplish," said Head Coach Mike Hodge. "We will be tested every week and it's important for us to play 60 minutes of good lacrosse in every game."
The Saints opened up the 2012 season against the Huskies of Northern Illinois with an 11-5 non-conference victory. Leading 4-3 at half, the two teams traded a pair of goals before the Saints took command of the game in the fourth quarter. Holy Cross put up 6 unanswered goals to take an 11-4 lead. The Huskies added a late goal in the fourth as time expired.

In the second game of the afternoon, the Saints played Loyola University in an East Division match-up. Holding a 4-2 lead over Loyola in the second quarter, the Saints put up 8 unanswered goals to close out the final 45 minutes and cruised to a 12-2 victory. Freshman Conor Tallet led the Saints in goal.

"We started off slow but we were able to hit our stride by the end of the NIU game," said Coach Hodge. "The team earned two great wins on Saturday and we can now focus our attention to our upcoming home games."

The Saints (2-0, 1-0) will play host to Northwestern University this Saturday, March 31st, at noon. They will also host East Division opponent University of Chicago at 2:30pm on the fields behind the Pfeil Center.

(Notre Dame, IN)  The Holy Cross Baseball Team took on Saint Xavier over the weekend in a three game CCAC Series.

The first two games were played at Saint Xavier, but today's game was played at Coveleski Stadium.  All three games started out alright for the Saints, but big innings in all three games allowed the Cougars of Saint Xavier to take control.

Game One

In game one, the Saints were within stricking distance as it was only 4-0 entering the fifth inning.  The Cougars, however, mounted a five run fifth inning to seize the momentum in the game, and beat the Saints 10-2.

Sophomore Ben Bournay (St. Joseph, Michigan) led the Saints going 1 for 3 with 2 runs batted in for the game.  Freshman Trevor Hurley (Sioux Falls, South Dakota) had a nice game for the Saints going 2 for 3 on the day at the plate.

Senior Patrick Huyge (Grand Haven, Michigan) got the loss on the day allowing nine hits, nine earned runs, and 1 walk in 4.2 innings pitched.

Game Two

In game two the Saints jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but the Saints relinquished that lead in the second inning as they allowed nine runs in the bottom half of the inning.  Those were the only runs the Saints gave up for the game, but it was enough as the Saints lost 9-4 in the second game of the doubleheader.

Sophomore Michael Pizzuto (Sarasota, Florida) led the Saints at the plate going 3 for 4 and scoring two runs in the game.  Hurley went 1 for 3, and batted in three of the four runs for the Saints in the second game.

Sophomore Steve Bunnell (Carlsbad, CA) got the loss in the second game.  He allowed four hits and eight earned runs in 1.2 innings pitched.

Game 3

Freshman Pat Gullickson (Chanhassen, Minnesota) started out the game pitching very well for the Saints as it was 2-1 in favor of the Cougars through four innings of the play.  A three run fifth inning proved to be the dagger for the Saints as they lost 9-1 in the Sunday home matchup with Saint Xavier.

Sophomore Jackson Hallahan (Silver Lake, Minnesota) went one for three on the day, and Bunnell went one for four as the Saints were limited to just six hits all afternoon.

Gullickson gave up seven hits and three earned runs over 5.1 innings pitched.

The Saints are now 4-17 on the year, and 2-6 in the CCAC.  Their next game is Wednesday March 25th at Coveleski Stadium against Judson who sits at first place in the North Division of the CCAC.  It is a doubleheader, and first pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.

In game one of the matchup the Saints held on for their second conference win of the season by beating Illinois Tech 6-4.  In the second game game the Saints battled back from allowing eleven runs in the first inning, but came up just short losing 13-4.

Freshman Pat Gullickson (Chanhassen, MN) had a fantastic game in game one on the mound pitching a complete game allowing nine hits, two walks, and three earned runs.

Junior centerfielder Danie Wawrzusin went 3-4 with two rbi's in the game including the go ahead rbi in the fourth knocking in sophomore Jackson Hallahan (Silver Lake, MN) to break a 3-3 tie.  Sophomore Steve Bunnell (Carlsbad, CA) went a perfect 2-2 on the day from his spot as a dh, and freshman Michael Pizzuto (Sarasota, FL) conitnued his great play as of late going 2-4 on the day.

In game two of the evening the Saints struggled early as they gave up eleven runs in the first inning to spot Illinois Tech an 11-0 lead.  The Saints battled back to cut the lead to 11-7 heading in the fifth inning.  The Scarlet Hawks, however, rebounded by scoring two runs in the inning and stopping the momentum of the surging Saints.

Pizzuto went 3-3 with a walk and a rbi.  Freshman Paul Kappaz (Grosse Pointe, MI) went 2-4 on the day with one run batted in for the Saints, and freshman Blake Comella (Glendale, AZ) went 2-4 with two runs batted in on the evening.

(Notre Dame, IN)  The Holy Cross Baseball Team went on the road to take on the Panthers of Purdue North Central over the weekend.

The first game was a nail biting pitcher's duel as the Saints dropped a close one 2-1 after beating the Panthers the previous day at Coveleski Stadium.  The second game of the double-header proved to be a bit more challenging as Holy Cross dropped game two 17-8 to the host Panthers.

Sophomore Steve Bunnell (Carlsbad, CA) pitched a solid first game pitching 6 innings allowing five hits, three walks, and two earned runs.  Unfortunately, the Saints could not muster up anymore run support as they only posted one run in the loss for Bunnell.

Freshman Gio Ayala (Miami, FL) went 2-3 in the game, and had the Saints only RBI.  The Saints were plagued all game by leaving people on base as they had 11 hits, but still only scored one run.

In game two the Saints had bad innings in the fourth and fifth inning that was just too much to overcome down the stretch in the 17-8 loss to the host Panthers.  Freshman Michael Pizzuto (Sarasota, FL) went 3-4 in the game with three runs batted in.  Sophomore Ben Bournay (St. Joseph, MI) had a solid game for the Saints going 2-4 with 2 runs batted in on the day.

The Saints are now 3-13 and 1-2 in the CCAC.  Their next game is at home tomorrow against Illinois Tech at Coveleski Stadium.  The game is double-header and the first pitch for game one is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
