Saints Drop Road Contest at St. Ambrose
The Holy Cross College men's basketball team fell to St. Ambrose University, 84–74, Saturday afternoon at Lee Lohman Arena.
The Saints and Bees traded momentum early, with Holy Cross holding a brief lead midway through the first half before St. Ambrose edged ahead 36–34 at the break. The game featured 8 lead changes and 4 ties, highlighting a competitive opening 20 minutes.
St. Ambrose pulled away in the second half behind efficient shooting, outscoring the Saints 48–40 after halftime. The Bees shot 58.6 percent from the field in the second half and 47.8 percent from beyond the arc for the game, creating separation in the final 10 minutes.
Donovan Waleskowski led Holy Cross with 23 points, knocking down 7-of-7 free throws. Joey Garwood added 14 points, while Jayden Sanders chipped in 12 points and 3 blocks. Callaghan Weatherspoon finished with 11 points and 4 rebounds.
Holy Cross shot 45.3 percent from the field and 82.6 percent from the free throw line, but St. Ambrose's bench production and points off turnovers proved decisive. The Bees held a 25–11 advantage in bench points and scored 17 points off turnovers.
The Saints move to 6–10 overall and 1–7 in conference play and will look to bounce back as conference action continues next week at home on Wednesday Jan 17th against Saint Xavier. Tipoff is set for 7:30 PM.
