Sanchez’s Late Goal Lifts Saints Past Saint Francis (IN)
Notre Dame, Ind. — The Holy Cross College men's soccer team earned a dramatic 1-0 victory over Saint Francis (IN.) on Tuesday afternoon at Saints Field, improving their record to 3-3 on the season.
The match was a tight defensive battle from start to finish, with both teams trading chances throughout. Goalkeeper Isaias Rubio stood tall for the Saints, recording 3 saves to preserve the clean sheet.
The breakthrough finally came in the 89th minute when Nathan Sanchez capitalized with a decisive strike off a set piece, giving Holy Cross the lead with just over a minute left in regulation. Sanchez's goal proved to be the difference as the Saints held off a late push from Saint Francis to secure the win.
Holy Cross finished with 13 shots, 6 of them on target, while limiting Saint Francis to 17 attempts, 7 on frame. The Saints also battled through a physical contest that featured multiple yellow cards on both sides.
With the victory, Holy Cross improves to 3-3 overall, while Saint Francis drops to 2-5-1.
The Saints will return to play when they travel to Grace College on Saturday September 20th. Kickoff is set for 5:00PM.
